Happy Mother's Day!! Feliz día de la madre!!

I totally forgot how important Mother’s day is here in Mexico!! I was surprise to see so much of a celebration, as well as, flowers stands, and of course Mother’s day festivities at the girls school. Even the Google Doodle for Google Mexico look quite festive.

Había olvidado totalmente que el Día de la Madre se celebra por todo lo alto en México. Me sorprendió tanto la celebración como la cantidad de puesto de flores en las calles y los festejos en la escuela de la chicas. Hasta el Google Doodle tenía que ver con nuestra celebración!!

My dear husband got me two huge sunflower bouquets; they’re beautiful as they are heavy!! He totally took me by surprise.

Feliz día del Niño!!! Happy Children's Day!!

Today in Mexico we’re celebrating “El Día del Niño,” “Children’s Day.”

It’s the first time my daughters get in touch with this part of Mexican culture. They woke up all excited about the celebration they’ll be having at school: special lunch, movie time, extra recess, so on and so forth.

Hoy en México  estamos celebrando el Día del Niño. Es la primera vez que mis hijas lo celebran como parte de la cultura Mexicana, así  que esta mañana se levantaron muy contentas pensando en todas las cosas que iba a pasar en su escuela en este día tan especial: una iba a tener un lunch especial, otra que iban a ver una película, otra va a tener más recreo…

Para celebrar este día en mi blog, decidí  hacer un mosaico lleno de inspiración y con algunos patrones gratis para hacer algo especial ya sea para nuestros niños o para el pequeño niño que aún vive en nuestros corazones.

Espero que se sientan inspiradas y que celebren un muy feliz día del Niño en donde quiera que estén.

Embroidery sampler exercise/ Ejercicio de muestras de bordado

Last year I bought the Mary Thomas’s Dictionary of Embroidery Stitches; and before traveling, I prepared a little embroidery set to keep trying new stitches in my free time. Some of them were quite challenging for me, like the Maidenhair stitch. It took me a while to get it right; I simply couldn’t eyeball the angle and the length of the stitches…

El año pasado me compré el libro Mary Thomas’s Dictionary of Embroidery Stitches, me preparé un paquetito de bordado antes de empezar a viajar para así seguir probando nuevas puntadas en mi tiempo libre. Algunas puntadas me costaron trabajo, como la puntada de Maidenhair. Me tomó un rato agarrarle la mano al largo de las puntadas así como también al ángulo de las mismas.

I fell in love with composite stitches like the Butterfly stitch or the Guilloche stitch. It was fun to plan the colors I wanted to use. I also realized that when lacing the stitches with a different color thread, it’s easier to do so with a blunt needle than with a regular embroidery needle to avoid separating the thread of the previous stitches.

Me encantaron las puntada compuestas como el Butterfly  or el Guilloche. Fue divertido escoger los colores de los hilos que usaría en cada puntada. También aprendí que es más fácil trabajar las puntadas que van entre los hilos con una aguja de punta aroma, cosa de no separar los hilos de las puntadas anteriores.

The Mary Thomas’s Dictionary of Embroidery Stitches book has widen my embroidery horizons, there still are lots of stitches I’ll definitely try at some point. For now, this sampler exercise has brought a few ideas for a formal sampler embroidery pattern to add to my 3KF collection, a very Mexican one.

Este libro amplió mis horizontes en cuanto al bordado, aún me quedan muchísimas puntadas que quiero intentar algún día. Por ahora les puedo decir que este muestrario me ha dado ideas para agregar un patrón o molde de bordado tipo muestrario a mi colección 3KF el cual será bien mexicano.

Meet Maple and Chili. / Les presento a Maple y Chili.

Since we moved into our new home, we suspected we might have mice in our backyard. There were those little prizes every morning that made us think we actually were infested. In our experience, there is no better way to get rid of that kind of invaders than with their counter part: the lovely and fluffy cat.

Cuando nos mudamos a esta casa, sospechábamos que teníamos un problema de ratones en el patio trasero. Todas las mañanas encontrábamos ciertos premios, nos sentimos invadidos. En nuestra experiencia, no hay mejor antídoto para los ratones que un gato encantador y peludo.

We didn’t hesitate at the thought of new kitties. We made up our minds, and we picked out two lovely kitties from our local animal shelter.  I can’t explain to you how happy we are we did!!

No lo pensamos dos veces y nos decidimos por dos gatitos que adoptamos del refugio de animales de nuestro rumbo. No les puedo explicar lo felices que nos hacen estos bichitos!

Maple is a female cat, she’s three months old, and she’s teeny tiny. She’s the shy one, her meows sound baby-ish sweet and mellow.

Maple es una gatita de tres meses, es chiquitita. Maple es tímida y sus maullidos suenan de lo más tiernos.

This orange cat is Chili Gordo. My youngest came up with that name, and it actually fits this “boy” cat spicy personality. He’s four months all and a total trouble maker. He’s the one that much rather chases me around the house instead of sun bathing  like Maple. He “talks” to me while I’m in the kitchen, and fits against my slouchy pants all the time. 

Este gatito anaranjado es Chili Gordo. A mi hija menor fue a la que se le ocurrió el nombre que hasta le queda bien por ser un chico medio loco y acelerado. Chili tiene cuatro meses, es super activo. Nos persigue por la casa en vez de acostarse a tomar el sol como Maple. Me “platica” mientras estoy en la cocina y pelea con la tela de mis pantalones anchos.

In the end, it turned out that what we thought was a mice invasion actually were seeds from the neighbor’s trees. And although at the moment they aren’t required to hunt for mice, we’re happy we adopted Chili and Maple.

Al final result que lo que creíamos era una plaga de ratoncitos, no eran más que las semillas del árbol del vecino que volaban a nuestro patio. Aunque no hayan sido requeridos como cazadores, estamos felices de haber adoptado a Chili y a Maple.

In case you were wondering, our dear Mishu had to be left behind due to bureaucracy problems. It was really sad to say goodbye to her.

Si se preguntan que pasó con Mishu, les cuento que la tuvimos que dejar por problemas burocráticos. Fue muy triste decirle adiós.

 

Orange peels: the first block.

If you follow me on IG, Twitter , or Facebook, you might have seen that I’m all excited about my new “orange peels” project. I bought two  scrap bags from Pink Castle Fabrics, and I don’t know if it’s a mere coincidence but all the lovely scraps, somehow, look really pretty together. I made this mini quilt long ago for Gayle Brindley, and I love how it turned out. I don’t think this new project will have the same color style as the one I made for Gayle Brindley. That one took a lot of planning, and I had my whole fabric stash for choosing, fussy cutting, and matching the pieces to the original sketch. I think there must be another fun way to put together these blocks.

Si me siguen en IG, Twitter o en Facebook, tal vez hayan visto que empecé unos bloquecitos que me tienen muy contenta, se llaman “orange peels” o cáscaras de naranja. Compré dos bolsas de retazos de Pink Castle Fabrics y no se si fue coincidencia pero los retacitos se ven hermosos todos juntos. Hace mucho tiempo hice un mini quilt de cáscaras de naranja para Gayle Brindley, era un intercambio y me gustó mucho como me salió. No creo que este me vaya a salir ni cercanamente parecido al que hice para Gayle ya que cuando hice ese mini quilt, tenía todas mis telas juntas como para poder planear, escoger, cortar detalladamente las partes del el diseño de la tela que quería usar en determinadas partes del quilt; lo que inglés llaman “fussy cutting”. Aun así, creo que estos bloques deben tener otras maneras de ser interpretados.

 

I made my templates myself as usual, and I sewed one block (by hand) just to make sure the peels make a good even circle when put together. It worked fine but the block size is an odd one, a 7.5 inches square. I much rather have those smallish leaves (or peels) than bigger ones.

Hice mis propios moldes como usualmente. Corté y cosí este bloque (todo a mano) solo para asegurarme que los moldes funcionaban y que hacían un círculo bien parejito al unir cuatro de las hojitas. Funcionó, pero el bloque tiene un tamaño poco convencional: 7.5” por lado. Creo que prefiero que las hojitas sean así de chiquitas.

Hoy mi amiga, la talentosa Nicole de Follow the white bunny está cumpliendo años. Aparte de ser súper talentosa, Nicole es una chica muy generosa y a manera de celebrar, ella está compartiendo con nosotras "las amantes del bordado", un hermoso patrón de bordado el cual podemos descargar gratis. Orange peels

This time around (compared to our previous move) things are falling into place little by little. We moved into our new place with just the basic stuff to live by until our container arrives from Argentina. We got cable, and internet…  We are finally eating homemade meals which are really a blessing after two months of restaurant food.

Las cosas se están acomodando tranquilamente por estos rumbos,  comparado a lo difícil que fue ubicarnos en Argentina. Esta semana  finalmente nos mudamos a nuestra nueva casa con solo lo básico para sobrevivir mientras llegan nuestra mudanza. Ya tenemos cable e internet!! También empecé a cocinar para mi familia lo cual nos parece un lujo después de dos meses de comer en restaurantes todos los días y tres veces al día.

I have lots of pictures to show you, I’ll be posting them as soon as I find the hardware to that specific camera. In the meantime, I will wash and iron this lovely pile of fabric to start cutting "orange peels." The washer and dryer are already installed as well.

Tengo muchísimas fotos que mostrarles, las subiré tan pronto encuentre el cable de la cámara. Mientras voy a preparar estas telitas para empezar a cortarlas en “orange peels”.  La lavadora y secadora también fueron instaladas esta semana.

Fabric love

While in Argentina, my friend Nicole from Follow the white bunny posted about this lovely fabric line: Timber & Leaf by Sarah Watts. I fell in love when I saw the whole collection via internet, and I didn't forget to get myself a nice half yard bundle of it.

Mi amiga Nicole de Follow the white bunny, hizo un post acerca de esta encantadora línea de telas creada por Sarah Watts llamada Timber & Leaf, yo todavía vivía en Argentina. Me gustó tanto esta colección cuando la ví por internet que no se me olvidó comprarme unas cuantas yardas apenas tuve la oportunidad.

I'm fascinated this fabric line, and so happy to have this bundle in my hands!! Its forest animals remind me of the northern part of Michigan so much.The hardest part will be cutting through it. BTW, I got my bundle at StashModernFabric in case you were wondering.

Estoy fascinada con mis telas nuevas!! Los animalitos del bosque de estas ilustraciones me recuerdan los bosques del norte de Michigan. Lo más difícil sera cortar estas telas... Por si se preguntan, estas telas se pueden comprar en Stash Modern Fabric.

I may be enjoying my new city and all that Jazz but the world doesn’t stop there. I was contacted by Pat from The Quilt Show with a  reminder that Quilting Day is just around the corner.
