Aurifil giveaway/ Sorteo Aurifil

Before I moved here to Argentina, I received a lovely box of Italian threads from Aurifil. Some to try and some to share with my readers. So far, I've been in love with the number 50 thread. As I said in my last post, it's the perfect thread weight for appliqué. I'm using it to hand stitch my circles, and I also tried it with my clamshells project which is slowly but surely coming along as well.

I also have my eyes on the wool thread thinking of an embroidery project involving more birds.

Hasta ahora les puedo decir que estoy enamorada del hilo del número 50 que como dije en mi post anterior, es del grosor perfecto para appliqué. Lo he usado para coser mis círculos y también lo probé con mis "clamshells" que es un otro proyecto que va creciendo de a poquitos. Tengo los ojos puestos en el hilo de lana y estoy planeando usarlo en algún bordado de pajaritos.

Así que si tienen ganas de probar estos hilos déjenme un comentario ya que estoy sorteando cinco de estos paquetitos encantadores de hilos Aurifil. Cada set contiene cinco hilos de diferentes medidas. Este sorteo estará abierto por una semana.

Circles/ Círculos

Posting, I love posting and chatting with crafty friends on-line, but lately that has been impossible as my internet connection is poor, weak, and stinky. The good thing about it is that I've been truly concentrating in sewing, and saving the little moments of good internet connection for sending out embroidery patterns around the world. Thanks so much for never forgetting about my embroidery patterns always available at my etsy store.

Remember my post about Pat Bravo? and the quilt without a “cutter”?? off course you do, after all the chit-chat about the terrible word I wrote on it * blushing *... Well, I've been working on it really hard on that quilt, and I've been enjoying every minute of it as well.

I chose to work with circles [once again,] and appliqué with the same technique I used on this other quilt. This quilt will have lots of hand quilting as well.

I was having a bit of trouble with the weight of my thread while stitching the circles in place, but I remembered I have some  Aurifil N.50 thread, and it worked its charm!! Not a single knot, and it was truly the perfect weight for appliqué-ing.

The soft texture of the Art Gallery Fabrics and the Aurifil thread are such a perfect match that I will be bumming when done with this project.

A pesar de lo que me encanta conversar con ustedes, me ha sido imposible subir más posts debido a la espantosa, débil y apestoza conección de internet que tengo al momento. Lo bueno es que al no poder conectarme me he concentrado en coser y en aprovechar los pequeños momentos de buena conección para mandar mis patrones alrededor del mundo. Gracias por no olvidar que mis patrones están siempre disponibles en mi tienda etsy.

Se acuerdan del post acerca de Pat Bravo?? y del quilt sin un cuter?? por supuesto que se acuerdan después de toda la controversia acerca de la palabrota que escribí en la parte en inglés * que vergüenza*.. pues he estado trabajando en este nuevo quilt y lo he disfrutado cada minuto.

Escogí trabajar con círculos otra vez y con appliqué; con la misma técnica que usé para este otro quilt. Este quilt tendrá también mucho de acolchado a mano. Estaba teniendo un poco de problema el appliqué, yo creo que tenía que ver con el grosor del hilo; recordé que tengo un hilo de Aurifil del número 50 y funcionó de maravilla, ni un solo nudo!!

La hermosa textura de las telas de Art Gallery Fabrics y los hilos de Aurifil son realmente una combinación tan fantástica que el día que se me acabe el proyecto voy a estar muy triste.

Bueno, eso es todo por hoy, estas fotos tomaron mucho tiempo en subir. Trataré otra vez mañana ya que tengo un regalito para ustedes, tiene que ver con ciertos hilos italianos ;)

Unpacking/ Desempacando

Seems like we're finally getting settled. Our furniture was unloaded last weekend, and my husband finally got our car home from Buenos Aires. For the last four days, we've been unpacking and trying to organize our new home. The girls are a bit out of control as they're getting to learn the rules of this new land: a neighborhood full of children with way less rules than what the girls were used to in the US. In the meantime, I'll leave you with some pictures of Cordoba, and I'll be back tomorrow with something really special to share. XO

Finalmente nos estamos acomodando en nuestro nuevo lugar. Nuestros muebles llegaron el fín de semana pasado y mi esposo logró traer el auto desde el puerto en Buenos Aires. Hemos desempacado por los últimos cuatro días tratando de organizarnos en nuestra nuevo hogar. Las niñas estan un poquito descontroladas, tratando de aprender las nuevas reglas de este vecindario lleno de chicos; chicos que viven con muchas menos lineamientos a comparación de como vivían ellas en Estados Unidos. Mientras, los dejo con unas fotos que he tomado de la ciudad de Córdoba, mañana volveré con algo especial para compartir. Besos y abrazos!

The noble thimble/ El noble dedal

I always looked at thimbles as a pretty nicknack. I never felt the need to truly learn to use a thimble to protect my finger tips until now that I've been hand quilting a large quilt. I'm happy to report that I was smart enough to pack a few of these cuties with me. After stabbing myself a few times with both ends of my quilting needle, I decided it was time to use a thimble.

I'm using the leather thimble for the task, I fixed it to the right size and it works for me... still my finger tips are getting harder but it's easier to push the needle trough the layers of the quilt.

A thimbles is quite an irresistible little gadget. I looked at them every time I went to a fabric store, and at antique stores while living in the US. They're really pretty to look at, and I bought a few.

Like this one. I have no idea how old it is, but what got my attention is that it had a commercial function as an advertisement item. It reads “Racine Pure Milk Co. Inc. Dairy Products”, lots of words for this little one! Imagine that, the noble thimble was used as an advertisement item to get to the lady of the house, who from among other many things had [or loved] to sew. Otherwise, this thimble wouldn't made sense.

 

Siempre ví los dedales como una curiosidad más que como algo utilitario. Como casi no cosía a mano, nunca sentí la necesidad de aprender a coser con un dedal para proteger la yema de mi dedo, hasta ahora que estoy cosiendo el acolchado de un quilt grande. Les cuento que felizmente empaqué unos cuantos dedales conmigo. Después de haberme pinchado, tanto con la punta como con el revés de la aguja, decidí que tenía que usar un dedal. Escogí el dedal de cuero, ajusté el tamaño y funciona de maravilla. Las yemas de mis dedos se endurecen cada vez más, pero al menos puedo empujar la aguja a través de las capas del quilt.

Pero volviendo al tema, los dedales son para mi una cosa irresistible. Cuando vivíamos en los Estados Unidos, siempre los miraba en las tiendas de telas y en las antigüedades. Son tan lindos! Me compré algunos como este pequeñín. No tengo idea que tan antiguo es, pero lo que me llamó la atención es que este dedal fué usado como un medio publicitario. Tiene escrito “Racine Pure Milk Co. Inc. Dairy Products,” muchas palabras para un dedal tan chiquito!! Imagínense que este noble dedal fué usado como anuncio dirigido al ama de casa quien, entre otras cosas, tenía que [o amaba] coser. De otra manera este dedal no tendría razón de ser.

A love-hate relationship/ Una relación amor-odio

I waited long enough to have the time to hand quilt my SGQ. I'd say it's one of the quilts (that I have made) that I like the most. I love this quilt because it breaks with my light background quilts pattern, I wouldn't change that “Chinese Blue” background for any other color in the world. I also love it because I learned a lot about piecing curves along with the other ladies in the “Single girl support group.” There was lots of sewing and reaping!! At this point three fourths of my twin size quilt is almost done.

I'm getting faster and faster at it, dedicating only an hour to an hour and one half, or what ever a children' s movie lasts, really pays off. But at this point I really want to see it finished. I know that as soon as my sewing machine gets here, I'll put this baby aside, and who knows when I will truly finish it. I love it but I'm tired of it, I need it, but I want something different to stitch on. You see? It's a love-hate relationship.

Esperé por un largo tiempo antes de poder dedicarme a coser el acolchado de mi SG a mano. Diría que es uno de los quilts que más me gusta de todos los que he hecho. Me encanta que el fondo no es de un color claro como el resto de mis quilts, no cambiaría este “Chinese blue” por ningún otro color en el mundo. También me encanta porque fué con este quilt que aprendí muchísimo acerca de como coser curvas gracias a las chicas en el “grupo de apoyo para chicas solteras” [… suena muy chistoso en español] y apesar de ello, todavía tuve que coser y des-coser muchísimas veces!

Al momento llevo terminado el acolchado de casi tres cuartos del quilt. Con cada día que pasa me vuelvo más rápida y al dedicarle una hora y media o lo que dura una película infantil, es suficiente para sentir que avancé. La verdad es que ya quiero verlo terminado. Estoy casi segura de que el día que mi máquina de coser llegue, pondré de lado este proyecto y quien sabe cuando lo volveré a retomar. Amo este quilt pero ya me cansé de el, lo necesito, pero quiero algo diferente que coser. Ven? Es una relación amor-odio.

How I met Pat Bravo/ Como conocí a Pat Bravo

One of the highlights of going to Quilt Market last year, was meeting Pat Bravo. It was kind of funny the way we met. It was almost the end of day three at QM, when I went to get something to drink at the food area. On my way back to the exhibition floor, I overheard two girls and guy giggling, and speaking in Spanish with an Argentine accent. I was curious, I actually thought of a South American based company exhibiting their products at QM. The young man greeted me, very formal, very polite for being so young, and started showing me his fabulous fabric catalogs. We started talking about fabric lines and about the fabric company his parents own, and that her mom was fabric designer.

Who's you mother I asked?? My mother is Pat Bravo. In my excitement, and lack of sleep, I didn't realize I was right across the Modernology booth, and all surrounded by Art Gallery Fabrics!! The young man I'm telling you about is Alexander Bravo, Pat's son. At that moment Pat wasn't there, and I felt bummed I didn't get to meet her. We exchanged business cards, and I walked away. I was two aisles away when Alexander reached me to tell me his mother was in the booth, and that we should meet. And that's how I got to meet Pat Bravo. She's such a down to earth lovely, and talented lady. She's originally from Argentina (but she's based in the US,) and you can feel her South American warmth in her ways and her fabric designs. One of the things we talked about was how a passion for quilting is taking over the world, and it's presence in the Spanish speaking countries. We were trying to figure out the translation to the Spanish of words like “rotary cutter”.

In the end she let me take a lovely bundle of her fabrics with me, with the idea of making a quilt without the usual quilting supplies such as the rotary cutter, the rulers, and the cutting mat. Do you think is possible? Well, what can be better than to start with this project now that I don't have any of my quilting tools with me.

Of course it took me a while to come up with a plan!! but I think I'm ready for this challenge. I'll get started, and I will try to post about it weekly, until the quilt is finished. I can not tell you how honor I feel of meeting Pat Bravo and her amazing [family] team, and of having a chance to make a quilt with her fabric even if I'm totally outside of my comfort zone, namely: my sewing room.

In the meantime, I can tell you that so far I learned that “rotary cutter” is just cutter here. It's pronounced “-------” with a very Spanish accent.

Edit: it turns out that the supposed to be translation of rotary cutter to Spanish is a really bad word in English!! So I will omit that word in this section of my post, and I apologize for that. #myfaceisturningred

 

Uno de los sucesos mas importantes de Quilt Market fue conocer a Pat Bravo. La conocí casi que de casualidad. El día número tres de QM estaba llegando al final, y me acerqué a la zona de comidas a comprar algo para beber. Caminaba de regreso a la exhibición cuando de pronto oí a unos chicos riéndose y hablando en español con un fuerte acento argentino. Moría de la curiosidad, pensaba que se trataba de alguna companía de telas sudamericana exponiendo en QM. El jovencito me saludó, muy educadamente para ser tan joven y me empezó a mostrar unos catálogos de telas. Empezamos a hablar de lo hermosas que estaban las telas y me contó que sus padres eran los dueños de la compañía y que su madre era la diseñadora. Quién es tu madre? Le pregunté y el me contestó: mi madre es Pat Bravo.

En mi euforia de estar en QM y mis noches sin dormir, no me había dado cuenta de que estaba justo en frente del puesto de Modernology y rodeada por las telas de Art Gallery!! El jovencito del que les hablo era Alexander Bravo, el hijo de Pat. En ese momento Pat no se encontraba en el puesto de sus telas, me sentí un poco descepcionada de no poder conocerla, así que intercambié tarjetas de presentación con Alexander, nos despedimos y me fuí. Dos pasillos mas adelante Alexander me alcanzó para decirme que su madre estaba en el puesto y que viniera a conocerla. Pat Bravo es una mujer encantadora, sencilla y talentosa. Ella es originalmente de Argentina (radicada en los Estados Unidos) y eso se nota en su manera de ser (una calidez muy latina) y en el diseño de sus telas hermosas. Hablamos como la pasión por el quilt esta alcanzando muchos rincones del mundo y de su presencia en los paises de habla hispana. Tratábamos de pensar el como se traducen palabras como “rotary cutter” al español.

Al final, ella me dejó llevarme un paquete de su tela con la idea de hacer un quilt sin usar las herramientas básicas como el rotary cutter, las reglas, y los mats (ni yo me se la terminología aún!!) Creen que sea posible? Pues que mejor que intentarlo ahora que no tengo ninguna de esas herramientas.

Por supuesto que me ha tomado un rato pensar en un plan para este quilt, pero creo que estoy lista. Empezaré con este proyecto e iré contándoles cada semana como voy y así hasta terminar. No tengo palabras para decirles los honrada que me siento de haber conocido a Pat Bravo y a su fantástico [familia] equipo y del chance de hacer un quilt con sus telas a pesar de estar totalmente fuera de mi zona de confort: mi estudio de costura.

Mientras les puedo decir que ya aprendí que 'rotary cutter' se dice 'cuter' con un acento bien español.

Embroidery pattern 8: Sharing is good/ Patrón de bordado 8: Que bueno es compartir.

What can be better than a fresh start with new stitching projects in this new year. Let me them introduce you to a new original 3KF embroidery pattern. “Sharing is good” is a instant gratification embroidery pattern. You can either embroider the outline, or fill in the shapes with satin stitch or just a simple running stitch going back and forth to fill in a wing, the tail of one of the birds or its whole body.

I confess I want to try putting all my cupcakes, and birds embroideries into quilting blocks and see what they can become.

El nuevo año nos trae un nuevo comienzo y que mejor que empezarlo con nuevos y lindos proyectos. Déjemne presentarles mi nuevo patrón de bordado “Que bueno es compartir” original de 3KF o sea que es mi propio diseño. Este patrón es felicidad al instante, se puede bordar de diferentes manera: sobre las líneas or rellenando los espacios como las alitas o los cuerpos de los pajaritos. Les confieso que quisiera convertir todos mis bordados de pasteles y pajaritos en bloques de quilt para ver en que se convierten.

End of the year post/Post de fin de año

I got a reminder that my Flickr account was about to expire. I went to Flickr, and as usual, I started wondering around, and commenting in a few of your lovely pictures. There's never enough time to look at it all. I also took a moment to take a look at my crafting accomplishments of this year. To my surprise I finished: five quilts, eleven craft projects, four tutorials, and six embroidery projects. I also posted two recipes. Not bad for a crazy, busy year!!

But what I enjoyed the most was reading through all the comments, and all the interaction with other Flickr friends. This sure is a lovely, welcoming craft/quilt community, and although this was a tough year for me and my family, sewing has saved me from going insane. Every stitch and each one of your comments, tweets, e-mail, FB likes has brought me joy, and a chance to keep a bit of myself in this little space: thank you for reading, and for sharing your thoughts with me.

Hopefully, the upcoming year 2012 will be an easier year, with more time to create, and to spend chatting with you while sewing a new fun project.

I have lots of plans for 2012, I heard here and there that 2012 is going to be an awesome year for quilting!! So stay tuned!

In the meantime, receive a big hug from me, with all my best wishes for you in the New Year 2012. May all your [crafty] dreams come true! Happy New Year!! XO

Recibí un correo recondándome que tenía que renovar mi suscripción a Flickr. Así que me fuí a Flickr y como siempre empecé a divagar y a comentar en sus lindas fotos; nunca tengo suficiente tiempo para verlo todo. También me tomé un poco de tiempo en echarle un vistazo a todas mis fotos de este año. Estoy felizmente sorprendida de haber acabado: cinco quilts, once proyectos de costura, cuatro tutoriales, y seis proyectos de bordado. También subí dos recetas, nada mal para el año loco que he tenido! Pero lo que más disfruto son los cometarios y la interacción con todos los amigos en Flickr, es realmente una comunidad de artesamos y quilters fantástica y amorosa.

Este ha a sido un año muy ajetreado para mí y para mi familia, la costura me ha salvado de volverme loca. Cada puntada, así como cada uno de sus comentarios, tweets, correos, y “me gusta” en FB me han dado mucha alegría así como el chance de conservar algo de mi individualidad en este pequeño espacio: mil gracias por visitar mi blog, por sus cometarios y por compartir sus pensamientos conmigo.

Espero que el año entrante sea un poquito más fácil, con más tiempo para crear y para pasarla charlando con ustedes mientra cosemos algún proyecto nuevo.

Tengo muchos planes para el 2012, he oido que el 2012 va a ser un año maravilloso para el mundo de los quilts. Así que estén pendientes!!

Mientras tanto, les mando un gran abrazo con mis mejores deseos para el año nuevo. Que todos sus sueños se hagan realidad!! Feliz Año Nuevo 2012!! Besos y abrazos!!

Merry Christmas and a giveaway winner/ Feliz Navidad y la ganadora del sorteo

I've been trying to post for a few days, but it just doesn't come right. I guess if it doesn't happen I shouldn't force it. Maybe today is the day...

First things first: the winner of the SUCH design giveaway is Elena from Barcelona, Spain!! Thank you all so much for participating. I visited all the new sites in the comments and I love them all!! What a nice way to make new blog friends.

The Christmas spirit is finally getting to me, and although I have had lots of stuff to do (tons paper work) I've been trying to stitch a bit here and there.

Since our Christmas stocking are not here, I decided to make at least three new stocking for my girls. We adventured ourselves into this big city downtown, and found some lovely fabric stores, more of the kind you find here in South America, with very simple products, and a few cotton fabrics.

We bought some natural color cotton mix fabric, some who-knows-what kind of gingham, and some white cotton fabric to make these Christmas stocking. The embroidery is from “Feeling Stitchy” December stitch along. We sewed the stockings at a dear friend's house, then I gave them the finally touches. They make us feel homey, I know it's going to be a lovely Christmas. And just in case I don't come back before the 25^th: Merry Christmas to you all !!

 

He estado tratando de subir un post por días, pero solo no me sale; y si no sale pues, no sale y no lo forzaré. Tal vez hoy suceda...

Pero lo primero es lo primero: la ganadora del patrón de casitas de SUCH Desings es Elena de Barcelona, España. Gracias a todas por particpar!! Visité todos los nuevos blogs en los comentarios y me parecieron fantásticos; que manera tan linda de hacer nuevas amistades.

Finalmente estoy entrando en la onda Navideña y anunque he tenido muchísimas cosas que hacer (toneladas de papeleos) he tratado de coser unas cuantas puntadas acá y allá. Como nuestras botas navidenas no estan acá, decidí hacer aunque sea tres para mis niñas. Nos aventuramos y nos fuimos al centro de la ciudad y encontramos unas tiendas de telas de lo mas simpáticas, del tipo que se encuentran aca en Sudamérica con telas muy sencillas y un poquitito de telas de algodón.

Compramos un corte de tela mezclada con color natural, una tela cuadriculada de extraña procedencia y un corte de tela blanca de algodón.

El bordado es de la página de “Feeling Stitchy” December stitch along. Cosimos las botas en casa de una amiga muy querida y después le dimos los últimos toques. Este projecto nos hace sentir como en casa, ahora se que será una Navidad fantástica. Y en caso de que no me asome por acá antes del 25 déjenme desearles una muy feliz Navidad. Feliz Navidad a todos!!

Broken dishes tutorial/ Tutorial: platos rotos

This week I'm the guest blogger at Quiltjane's blog! I'm participating with at tutorial for her Desperate Housewife's list of quilt blocks. The block that I chose is "Broken dishes," appropriate, right? It's a traditional block. I just figured out how to make it an 8" finished block to match the Jane's list of 50 blocks.

Here we go:

Cut four 5 x 5 in. squares in two different fabric prints...

Now cut the four square pieces diagonally.

Sew your triangles into matching squares, iron press, and trim them into 4.5" squares.

Arrange your squares... and sew them in pairs making sure that the seams match nicely, and press again.

Pin the two rows together, matching the seams again, sew, and press.

Ta-da! and there you have it! a broken dishes block. This is a super easy block that you can make as a beginner's block, or as a quick to piece kind of quilt. I definitely have this block in my list of future quilt projects.

Esta semana estoy de invitada en el blog the Quiltjane en Australia! Estoy participando con un turorial para su lista de bloques llamada "Desperate Housewifes' list of blocks" (la lista de bloques de las amas de casa desesperadas..?) El bloque que escogí hacer se llama "Platos rotos" muy apropiado para la lista de Jane. Es un bloque tradicional, solo que yo lo ajusté en tamaño para que fuera un bloque de 8 pulgadas por 8 pulgadas igual que los otros bloques en la lista de 50 bloques que Jane está recopilando.

Aquí vamos.

Corta cuatro cuadrados de 5" por 5" de dos telas diferentes.

Ahora córtalos diagonalmente.

Cóselos en cuadrados otra vez tomando dos piezas triangulares diferentes. Plánchalos abiertos y asegurate de que sean cuadrados perfectos de  4.5" por lado.

Cose dos los bloquecitos de pares, asegurándote que las costuras embonen y después plancha las nuevas costura.

Con ayuda de alfileres, asegúrate de alinear las costuras de las dos mitades. Cose tu bloque y plancha la nueva costura.

Ahí lo tienes!! tu bloque de "platos rotos"!! Este es un bloque facilísimo que se puede hacer a nivel de principiante o también se puede usar para un quilt que quieras hacer muy rapidito. Definitivamente lo tengo en mi lista de quilts por hacer.
