Couple of months I met Graciela Ferrari here in Cordoba at a meeting for the "Patchwork y Quilting en Cordoba".  She's textile artists and a local quilter. At one of our meetings I shared with her some of the fabrics that Bari J sent me to share with other quilters in this side of the world. The fabrics were from her fabric line "Paris Apartment". Here's is the project that Graciela made, isn't it lovely. I'm hoping to see a couple more of projects made with this fabrics. I myself have one going on at the same time. Thank you Graciela for sharing your placemat and you cup jacket with us. And thank you also to Bari J for sharing her fabrics with us.

 

 

Hace un par de meses conocí a Graciela Ferrari en Córdoba a través de un grupo de quilters que empezó hace poco por acá: "Patchwork y quilting en Córdoba." Ella es una artista textil y también hace quilts. En una de las reuniones le compartí telas  Bari J me mandó para compartir con otras quilters en este lado del mundo de su linea "Paris Apartment." Este es el proyecto que Graciela hizo, no es hermoso?? Por ahí vienen un par de proyectos más en camino hechos con la mismas telas. Yo también estoy haciendo uno. Gracias Graciela por compartir tu cubierta para taza y tu individual con nosotras. Y gracias también a Bari J por compartir sus telas con nosotras. 

Monday inspiration/ Inspiración para el lunes.

I've been enjoying all the sewing in pure solid colors all over my fav. sewing websites. They are incredibly inspiring. I myself picked a pile of yummy Kona colors at Pink Casttle Fabrics to get a taste of the solid color sewing experience. All I have to do is wait for it to arrive home. 

Other posts that have been tickling me are from Quilt Market in Kansas City. All the posts, (like this and this) and tweets from last weekend bring back great memories, tons of inspiration, and lots of excitment about what Quilt Market is all about, it's literally "quilt heaven."

He estado disfrutando mucho de los proyectos hechos con telas de colores sólidos en mis páginas favoritas de quilting y patchwork; estas fotos me llenan de ispiración!! Hace unas semanas me decidí escogí una pila de telas en hermosos colores de Kona Solids en Pink Castle Fabrics para así tener una probadita en esto de coser solo con colores sólidos, ahora solo tengo que esperar a que lleguen.

Otros posts que me han gustado esta semana son los que hablan acerca de Quilt Market en Kansas City que fué el fin de semana pasado. Posts como este, y este y los tweets del fin de semana pasado me traen recuerdos, me llenan de inspiración y de emoción de acerca de lo que es ir a Quilt Market. Es literalmente el cielo de los quilts!!

 

Stringy triangles/ Triángulos de tiritas

Sin mucho que contar por acá... solo que estos triangulitos hechos de tiritas me tienen muy contenta. A ver hacia donde apunta el resto de la semana. Feliz lunes!!

Happy Friday!!/ Feliz viernes!!

We had a short working week, Monday and Tuesday were holidays here as we celebrated May Day, or International Workers' Day.

A few random things to be happy about:

- Today we had a beautiful fall day, so I took my camera out and took a few pictures that I'll be posting as I edit them.

- My circles quilt is almost finished. Since this quilt is not following a pattern, it's giving me a hard time as to when to stop working on it.

- It's pizza day in this house!! and later we'll go to a tango concert in the city, yay!!

- I took a long nap.

- We're skipping the afternoon lessons.

- I changed the lense of my camera for one I haven't used in a long time, and it feels like new.

- I got an awesome deal with an etsyian fellow for an embroidery project ;)

Tuvimos una semana de trabajo corta, lunes y martes fueron feriados a razon del Día del trabajo.

La siguiente es una lista de cosas positivas por la que hoy estoy especialmente feliz:

- Hoy tuvimos un día soleado de otoño tan lindo, que saqué mi cámara y tomé algunas fotos que iré subiendo según como las vaya editando.

- Mi quilt de círculos está casi terminado. Como este quilt no sigue ningun patrón, me está costando decidir cuando es que tengo que dejar de trabajarlo, ya casi!!

- Hoy es noche de pizza en nuestra casa! Después iremos a ver un concierto de tango en la ciudad.

- Hoy tomé una siesta larga...

- Hoy no fuimos a las clases de la tarde y nos quedamos tranquilos en casita :)

- Cambié el lente de mi cámara por uno que no había usado en mucho tiempo, se siente como si fuera nuevo.

- Tengo un proyecto de bordado buenísimo con un chico en etsy ;)

Eso es todo, les deseo un feliz fin de semana. 

SGQ finished/ SGQ terminado

Remember I said I was putting some serious energy into finishing some projects? Well, I'm happy to say that last week I also finished my SGQ. Yes, the one that I hand quilted and that I was starting to love and hate at the same time.

The back of this quilt was made the night before my sewing machine was packed up in Michigan, a bit crazy. And the binding was made with all the left over fabrics from the circles in this quilt. I started this quilt in ... February, 2011! Should I ommit that piece of info?!?!

I think it's beautiful, and although my bed is a queen size bed (this quilt is twin size,) and I haven't been single for 15 years this quilt will be mine first until a fairy comes and takes it away ;)

 

Se acuerdan que dije que me había propuesto acabar unos cuantos proyectos que estaban a medias?? Pues con mucha felicidad les cuento que al fin acabé my SGQ. Si, el quilt que estaba acolchando a mano y con el que estaba empezando a tener una relación de amor y odio al mismo tiempo.

La parte de atrás fue hecha la noche anterior del día en que mi máquina fué empacada y el biés lo hice con todos los retacitos de tela que quedaron de los círculos. Empecé este quilt en Febrero del 2011!! Debería omitir esta información??

Me encanta como quedó y aunque mi cama sea tamaño queen (el quilt es más chico) y yo esté casada desde hace 15 años este quilt es para mi hasta el día que venga una de las hadas y se lo lleve ;)

To dream, to achieve, and a finished quilt top/ Soñar, lograr y un quilt top terminado

I've finished this quilt top a few weeks ago, but I didn't have the chance to take a picture and share it with you. It's the circles quilt top I started back in January with the fabrics that Pat Bravo generously shared with me to make a quilt without the usual tools. Effectively, I managed not to use the quilting rulers, the rotary cutter nor the cutting mat... proving myself one more time that anything that I ambition can be achieve even in terms of quilting. Do you catch my drift?? Here in South America we lack of many of the tools to make quilts, but that should not stop us from making the quilts we dream of.

Thanks Pat for sharing the joy of working with your wonderful fabrics with me. I'm truly in love with the quality of the Art Gallery Fabrics.

Next is the basting, and the quilting of it. I saved a bed sheet  for it. I also remembered to bring enough batting. The bad thing is that my sewing machine is not working anymore so I have to wait for a new one to arrive.

Terminé este quilt top hace unas semanas pero no había tenido tiempo de tomarle fotos y compartirlo con ustedes. Es el quilt de círculos que empecé en enero con las telas que Pat Bravo generosamente compartió conmigo para hacer un quilt sin la herramienta habitual. Efectivamente, no usé ni el cutter, ni las reglas y ni el tapete de cortar, probando, una vez más, que todo lo que uno se proponga se puede lograr incluso en términos de quilting. Me explico?? acá en el cono sur no tenemos muchas de las herramientas para hacer quilts, pero esto no debe detenernos de hacer los quilts con los que tanto soñamos. Gracias Pat por compartir conmigo el placer de trabajar con tus maravillosas telas. Estoy fascinada con la calidad de las telas de Art Gallery Fabrics.

Ahora sigue hacer el sandwich con la guata y la tela de atrás, para lo cual me guardé una sábana. También me acordé de empacar suficiente guata para este proyecto. Lo malo es que mi máquina de coser ya no sirve así que tengo que esperar a que llegue la nueva.

Little buckeye beauty tutorial

The second tiny block of this tutorial series is ready to go. I found this block in a bigger size in a quilting book. It's calles Buckeye Beauty which makes me think of a very cowboy-ish, American Western kind of theme.

It's the kind of block that makes more sense when it's together in a bunch of equally made blocks creating the usual tessellation pattern found in quilts. Still, it was a good candidate for my tiny blocks sampler, so I cranked some numbers to make a “little buckeye beauty.” I wrote this tutorial both in English and Spanish, you can download the English version here.

El segundo tutorial de mi serie de tiny blocks esta listo. Encontré este bloque de tamaño regular en un libro de quilting. Se llama Buckeye Beauty, suena como a vaqueros americanos...

Es el tipo de bloque que produce un patrón de estructura en mosaico o teselado cuando se le agrupa con más bloques del mismo tipo. Aún así, este bloque me pareció un candidato perfecto para mi tiny blocks sampler. Me tomé el tiempo de hacer algunos cálculos para así recrear este bloquecito al que llamaré "little buckeye beauty". Escribí este tutorial en ambos: inglés y español para ser descargado como PDF. Pueden descargar su copia en español acá. Que lo disfruten!!

First patchwork show in Cordoba/ Primera exposición the patchwork en Córdoba

When I knew I was moving to Cordoba, one of my biggest fears was not to find people with the same interest as me, namely fabrics and quilts. I surfed the internet until I found some lovely Cordobes ladies who were already involved in this kind of craft with much passion. Even when the kind of fabrics available in the north hemisphere are almost nonexistent in this part of the world, they're still able to create their beautiful quilts. These ladies found their way around the lack of quilting fabrics using  what is available here, and with the little bits that they can buy from international sellers (four fat quarters at the time I was told). I feel grateful I have been invited to join their group now organized as a community group on Facebook: Quilting y Patchwork en Córdoba which by the way keeps growing and growing. We'll be having our second meeting this week, and not only that, many of us will be joining Celia Ciuffo, Graciela Ferrari, and their students with some quilts in the first quilt show here in Cordoba at the CIART with the idea of expanding the knowledge of this amazing craft.

As you can see, the passion for patchwork and quilting can reach the further most ends of this planet. Isn't that amazing?? If you're in Cordoba please join us this upcoming Friday at 7PM at the CIART for the inauguration of such an important event.

 

Cuando supe que me mudaba a Córdoba, uno de mis grandes temores era el no encontrar gente con los mismos intereses como el patchwork, quilting, y las telas. Busqué en la internet hasta que encontré a las quilteras Cordobesas quienes estaban ya desarrollando este medio de arte textil con una pasión infinita a pesar de la escases de telas y materiales en este lado del mundo. Estas mujeres le han encontrado la vuelta al problema y crean sus hermosos quilts con la tela que se puede comprar acá y con pequeñas encomiendas que se compran en el extranjero (me cuentan que cuatro fat quarters a la vez es más o menos el límite). Me siento muy agradecida de haber sido invitada a unirme a su grupo: Quilting y Patchwork en Córdoba el cual ha sido organizado como una comunidad en Facebook que sigue creciendo. Estaremos teniendo nuestro segunda reunión como grupo esta semana. No solo eso sino que también muchas de nosotras fuimos invitadas a participar en la primera muestra de quilts en Córdoba en la CIART con Celia Ciuffo, Graciela Ferrari y sus alumnas a manera de expander el conocimiento de el quilt como tal y sus técnicas. Como pueden ver, la pasión por el patchwork y los quilts ha alcanzado los lugares mas reconditos del planeta, no es increíble?? Si están en cerca de Córdoba Capital por favor acérquense este viernes 16 de Marzo a la 7 PM a la CIART para celebrar la inaguración de tan importante evento.

A mini quilt, and a broken sewing machine/ Un mini quilt y una máquina de coser rota.

If you love sewing, as much as I do, if you sew every single day a little bit at least because it relaxes you, and makes you feel happy you'd be able to understand how sad it's to have your sewing machine die on you. Last night my sewing machine stopped working altogether, and I felt so incredibly bummed.

It was a Viking Husqvarna Platinum 775, and it lasted almost six years. I truly was expecting it to last much longer as I've been always careful to protect it from the dust, and I serviced it religiously every year. I was finishing my Fab Little Quilt project, so I doubled freaked out when it broke. I still have to finish the quilting part, and then work on the binding. Lucky, I had no heart to leave behind my first sewing machine: a 12 year old $100 Kenmore, a very basic kind of sewing machine. It worked it's magic. I sent my quilt to its new home but I'm still broken hearted.

 

Si a ustedes les gusta coser tanto como a mi, si son el tipo de persona que cose todos los días aunque sea un poquito porque les relaja y les hace simplemente feliz, entonces entienden los triste que es que se le muera a una la máquina de coser.

Anoche mi máquina dejó de funcionar y me sentí tan mal. Era una Viking Husqvarna Platinum 775 que me duró casi seis años. Esperaba que durara mucho más. Fuí muy cuidadosa en protegerla del polvo, la llevé  religiosamente a hacerle el mantenimiento cada año... Estaba terminando mi Fab Little Quilt cuando dejó de funcionar, estaba desesperada, todavía tenía que acabar parte del quilting y coser todo el biés. Por suerte, no tuve corazón para dejar atrás mi primera máquina de coser y la traje conmigo: una Kenmore de solo $100 de hace 12 años, super básica pero funcionó y me salvó. Pude mandar mi quilt a su nuevo hogar esta mañana y todavía tengo el corazón destrozado.

1% inspiration.../ 1% inspiración...

As much as I love creating mini quilts to swap, this time around I had a total 'creative blockage.' Who said “Genius is one percent inspiration, ninety-nine percent perspiration.”?? Oh yes, Thomas Alva Edison. Not that I'm a genious (I'm far from that) but this approach to creating stuff works when having trouble creating 'stuff', and only discipline can save you. I had previously started with these blocks, but I wasn't happy with the color scheme.

For the last four days, I've been forcing myself to dig into my fabric boxes until I finally coordinated fabrics with a bunch of little blocks I've previoulsy drawn, the creative juices started to flow again, and little by little mini quilt was born; OK, just the top. I still need to quilt it. All I hope now is that my partner at the "Fab little quilt swap" likes it as much as I do.

I documented the steps to most of these blocks to continue with the Tiny block series. Did you check the first tutorial??

Con todo lo que me gusta crear mini quilts para intercambiar en swaps esta vez me sentí totalmente bloqueada y sin ideas para seguir este proyecto. Quién fué el que dijo “El genio es un uno por ciento de inspiración y un noventa y nueve por ciento de sudor” ?? Ah, sí: Tomás Alva Edison. No es que me crea yo un genio (ni cerca!!) pero este frase se aplica muy bien cuando uno trata de crear algo nuevo con mucha dificultad y solo ser disciplinada sirve.

Había ya empezado con estos bloques pero no me gustaron mucho los colores. Así que por los últimos cuatro días, me he dado a la tarea de jugar con telas hasta encotrar la combinación correcta para empezar a coser los bloques que previamente había dibujado, las ganas de crear fueron apareciendo otra vez de a poquitos nació un mini quilt; OK solo el top. Todavía me falta el acolchado. Espero de corazón que a mi compañera secreta de "Fab Little Quilt Swap" le guste.

Tomé muchas fotos de todos los pasos para hacer los bloquecitos para así continuar con mi "Tini blocks series".

Ya vieron el primer tutorial??
