I hope you all had a wonderful, and re- energizing weekend! I did have a good one, full of fun stuff to do, and to see, and to feel inspired by.
Let me tell you about my weekend: last Friday we visited a little Bavarian town in Michigan called Frankenmuth. Picturesque little town full of local shops that sell goodies of every kind. We felt specially fond of the fudge, and indulged on it so much that I spent the next night with a little fairy having to run to the bathroom every three minutes. When leaving Frankenmuth, we stop at a antique mall. I had a wonderful time looking through tons of stuff, mostly old quilts.
I found this quilt top folded on a chair. It wasn't bigger than 40in. by 40 in. Beautiful vintage fabrics but there was a problem in the piecing (1 in. squares by the way) that made the center of it like a bubble. I thought about it, and as much as I loved it I was convinced I wouldn't be able to fix it.
Another pretty quilt. This one was a queen size.It was all hand quilted and in mint condition. I even wondered if it was really an antique...
More yummy quilts...This hanging artifact was really interesting.
A wall hanging...a 8 point star, no cheaters this time! The star is like a crazy quilt, with scalloped quilting, really fun.
Lots of textiles, aprons, table runners, little dresses, and super old, a worn out quilt. I loved looking through this place, imagining the making of the quilts, the women all sewing at the same time, the older women passing their quilting knowledge to the younger women. I can't imaging who got ride of such beauties, and family heirlooms. That's one of the things that always stops me from buying, the idea of taking a part of someone's life in a quilt, even after paying a few bucks for it. I guess I will truly treasure a beauty like these if it belonged to my family. Maybe that's one of the reasons why I like to make quilts: to transcend in time for my family, and let the younger generations know about me, many other of their elders by default. You know "this wagon wheel quilt was made by my great grandmother Paloma. Yeah! she was very grumpy when old but she loved her family so much..." something like that.
Still, I couldn't stop myself from buying at least a small wall hanging quilt...I'll show your tomorrow.
