Day 25: cross stitching/ Día 25: Punto de cruz

First of all, thank you for all your comments mostly on Facebook and Twitter and Flickr about my WW tutorial and fabric requirements posts! I love to share and your feedback makes it even better.

As busy as I am, I'm still trying to steal a moment to stitch. In the past weeks, I've been picking up some cross stitching. This is my first time so my stitching is way less than perfect, and there was lots of unpicking to do. The pattern is by Glory Bee Stitch, and I worked it out with some help from my Twitter friends. And since I don't know much of it:

- I didn't start in the middle as it's supposed to be.

- I had no clue as how to know much aida I'd need, and I drag the whole piece of aida around.

- I didn't follow the colors in the pattern…

- When working on rows that required two colors I decided to thread two different needles, and I changed colors as needed. It worked for me but I'm sure there is a better way to do it...

The fabric size issue was fixable, and this is the final product. It's a tiny 5" hoop!! Did you notices the "B"? In the end I wasn't sure about its color so I decided to change it to a deep purple, and I liked it better. 

I changed the hoop, centered the embroidery, backed it with a nice piece of white flannel, and added a bit of ribbon for hanging purposes. I gave this as a present to one of my best friends and I think she liked it.

Primero que nada quiero darles las gracias a todos los que me comentaron a través de Twitter, Facebook  y Flickr acerca de mi tutorial y mi post "Números". Me encanta compartir este tipo de posts con todos mis lectores y el leer sus comentarios lo hace aún más especial.

Así de ocupada como estoy, todavía encuentro pequeños momentos para coser un poquito aquí y allá. En las últimas semanas empecé un proyectito de punto de cruz. Esta fué la primera vez que lo intenté así que mis puntadas estuvieron lejos de ser perfectas y tuve que desbaratarlo varias veces. Este es un patrón de Glory Bee Stitch y aprendí  mucho de mis amigos en Twitter que me ayudaron en el proceso. Como no sé mucho de bordado en punto de cruz sucedió que:

- No empecé en el medio como debiera ser, y traje la tela entera conmigo porque no sabía cuanto cortar.

- No seguí los colores del patrón...

- Enhebré dos agujas con hilos de colores diferentes para trabajar en las líneas que tenía dos colores y las usé dependiendo del color con el que me tocaba bordar. Me funcionó el truco pero seguro que hay mejores maneras de hacer esto.

 

 

El problema del tamaño de la tela fué resuelto y este es el bordado terminado. Es chiquitot, en un aro de 5"!! Notaron la "B"? No estuve segura de que me gustaba como se veía, así que la cambié por un morado oscuro y me gustó más.

Le cambié el aro y lo centré con un poco de franela blanca en la parte de atrás. Le puse listón morado para colgarlo y se lo regalé a una amiga muy querida y me parece que le gustó bastante.

Numbers/ números

 

After posting the wagon wheel variation tutorial, I've been wondering about the amounts of blocks, pieces A and B, the amount of spokes and of fabric needed for either a baby/lap quilt top, a twin size quilt top, and even a queen size quilt top. I used my puzzler a bit and came up with the fabric requirements for different size quilts. 

Very basic math, nothing that would outsmart a brainiac.

I hope these numbers help you in case you want to use my tutorial to make a quilt top.

 

For a Baby/Lap size quilt top (40" x50")

- Blocks: 20 

- Pieces A: 80 pieces. 

  Cut seven 5.5" strips (cut 12 Pieces A per strip)

- Pieces B: 80

  Cut four 2" strips (cut 22 pieces per strip)

- Spokes: 120

-Fabric requirements:

2 yr. of background fabric, and 4 FQ (32 spokes per FQ) unless you want more variety of prints.

 

For a Twin size quit top (60" x 80")

- Blocks: 48

- Pieces A: 192

  Cut sixteen 5.5" strips (cut 12 pieces A per strip)

- Pieces B: 192

  Cut nine 2" strips (cut 22 pieces B per strip)

- Spokes: 288

- Fabric requirements:

3 1/3 yr. of background fabric. and 9 FQ (32 spokes per FQ) unless you want more variety of prints.

 

For a Queen size quilt top (80" x 90")

- Blocks: 72

-Pieces A: 288

  Cut twenty four 5.5" strips (cut 12 pieces A per strip)

Pieces B: 288 

  Cut fourteen 2" strips ((cut 22 pieces B per strip)

- Spokes 432

- Fabric : 5 yr. of background fabric, and 14 FQ (32 spokes per FQ) unless you want more variety of prints.

Después de subir mi turorial del "wagon Wheel" me quedé pensando en cuanta tela sería necesaria para hace un quilt de bebé, un quilt de una plaza o un quilt tamaño "queen" que es más o menos como tamaño matrimonial y un poco más grande que uno de dos plazas. Así que me puse a pensar y a calcular y saqué los números requeridos para saber el número de bloques y la cantidad de tela necesaria para hacer estos quilts (solo los quilt tops).

Espero que estos números les ayuden en caso de que quieran hace un quilt top.

Tamaño bebe  (40" x50")

- Bloques: 20 

- Piezas A: 80 piezas. 

  Corta 7  tiras de 5.5" (corta12 pieza A por tira)

- Piezas B: 80

  Corta 4  tiras de 2" (corta 22 piezas B por tira)

- Rayos: 120

-Tela requerida:

2 yr. tela de fondo, y 4 *FQ con diferentes motivos (32 rayos por FQ) a menos que quieras mas variedad de telas para los rayos

 

Tamaño individual o de una plaza (60" x 80")

- Bloques: 48

- Piezas A: 192

 Corta 16 tiras de 5.5" (corta 12 piezas A por tira)

- Piezas B: 192

  Corta 9 tiras de 2" (corta 22 piezas B por tira)

- Rayos: 288

- Tela requerida

3 1/3 yr. tela de fondo  9 FQ con diferentes motivos (32 rayos por FQ) a menos que quieras mas variedad de tellas para los rayos

 

Tamaño matrimonial o queen size (80" x 90")

- Bloques: 72

-Piezas A: 288

  Corta 24 tiaras de 5.5"  (corta12 piezas A por tira)

Piezas B: 288 

  Corta 14 tiaras de 2" (corta 22 piezas B por tira)

- Rayos 432

- Tela requerida:

 5 yr. de tela de fondo, y 14 FQ con diferentes motivos (32 rayos por FQ) a menos que quieras mas variedad de tellas para los rayos.

 

*FQ: fat quarter, mide 18" x 22" aproximadamente. Es un cuarto de una yarda de tela de algondón de 44" de ancho por 36" de largo.

New tutorial: Wagon Wheel variation/Nuevo tutorial: variación del bloque de la rueda de carreta??

Two years ago I made a wagon wheel tutorial. That tutorial explains a somehow traditional method for the making of that traditional block. I did love making those blocks, I loved it  so much that I made a complete quilt with fourty something blocks appliqué by hand. As much as I loved it, I don't think that I'd make it all over again. But my love for curves and circles didn't stop there. I kept experimenting and learning about sewing curves. I made this, this and this out of love for curves and circles. 

Today, I want to show you how to make a wagon wheel in a totally different, and more simple way; maybe the cheater's way?? For this tutorial I used The Curve Master, and although it isn't absolutely necessary, I like [love!] the idea of not having to use so many pins.  But please, go ahead and choose the curve sewing method that better fits you. Here's this video tutorial, and this other tutorial.

I made eight of these blocks, and so far it's working wonderfully!

As usual, all the seams are 1/4"...

1. Down load your templates from here, print them, and cut them. I used transparent template plastic, but any other sturdy material can be used as well.

2. Choose six different fabric prints, trace your spokes, and cut them. Also cut 4 pieces A, and 4 pieces B from a background fabric. All the seam allowances have already being added to the templates.

 

3. Sew you spokes in sets of three, and press them. My pictures show more set because I was working on more than one block...

4. Using your favorite curve sewing method, take one set of three spokes and sew it to one A piece. Press toward the A piece. Then sew the corner part or B piece, and press.

If you're using a curve master I recommend you place your piece A a bit higher than the spokes as shown in the picture. This way it'll be easier to square up the fourths before sewing them into a wagon wheel block.

5. Repeat step 4 with the rest of the three spoke sets. 

6. Square up your four small blocks to 5.5"

7. Pin two of these blocks together. Make sure the seams of your spoke match up correctly. Sew them and press the seams open. Do the same with the other two.

8. Pin the two halves together matching the seams as much as possible, sew them, and press them and square them up. I squared them up to 10" for an easy manageable number. 

And there you have it, a wagon wheel variation!

Ahora en Español...

Dos años atrás escribí un tutorial para hacer el bloque del "la rueda de carreta" (Wagon Wheel block). En dicho tutorial explico como hacer este bloque de una manera tradicional. Me gustó tanto este modelo que hice un quilt completo con cuarenta y tantos bloques aplicados a mano. Sinceramente,  no creo que nunca jamás me atreva a volverlo a hacer, pero mi amor por los bloques con curvas siguió. Seguí experimentando y aprendiendo, e hice este, este y este otro proyecto sólo por el amor a las curvas.

Hoy les quiero mostrar como hacer el mismo bloque en una manera totalmente diferente y mucho más simple, un poco tramposo?? Para este tutorial yo usé el "Curve Master" . No es totalmente necesario, pero yo lo prefiero a tener que poner todos los alfileres para coser una curva. Mi sugerencia es que cada quien escoja el método que le funcione mejor. Aquí tienen este video tutorial, y este otro tutorial.

Hasta ahora hice ocho de estos bloques y todo funciona de maravilla!!

Como siempre, todas las costura son de 1/4"...

1. Baja los esténciles de acá, imprímelos y cortalos en algún material fuerte como cartulina, o alguna mica delgada.

2. Con el esténcil que dice spoke/rayo corta seis "rayos" de telas variadas,  cuatro piezas A y cuatro piezas B de tela para el fondo del bloque.

3. Cose los rayos en grupos de tres y plánchalos. La foto muestra más de cuatro grupos porque hice más de un bloque para este projecto.

4. Toma uno de tus grupos de tres rayos y cóselo a una pieza A. Plánchalo hacia la pieza A. Después cose la pieza B y plánchalo hacia la pieza B. Al planchar, trata de no forzar la curva para no deformar el bloque.

Si estás usando el "Curve Master" recomiendo sobreponer la pieza A un poquito sobresalida del borde. Este detalle me ayudó al momento de cuadrar y emparejar los bordes correctamente. Repite el paso 4 con el resto de los grupos de tres rayos.

6. Empareja los cuatro cuadrados. Estos deben medir 5.5".

 

7. Junta con alfileres dos de los cuatro bloquecitos asegurando que las costuras de los rayos embonen perfectamente. Cóselos y plancha la costura abierta. Haz los mismo con las otra dos piezas.

8. Junta las dos mitades con alfileres asegurándose de que todas las costuras están perfectamente alineadas. Ahora cóselas, plancha la costura y empareja los bordes. El tamaño final de este bloque es 10" por lado.

 

Ahí lo tienes! Una variación en el bloque de la rueda de carreta.

Day 39: a gift for you from Bari J/ Dia 39: Un regalo para ustedes de parte de Bari J.

 

A few days ago I received a lovely package. It contained a nice sampler of Bari J's Paris Apartment fabrics. If you already have experienced this fabric line you know what I'm talking about. It's so beautiful, perfect quilters cotton with a lovely weight to it. She's an talented designer of fabrics and sewing patterns. I met here via twitter, a from what I read there I get the feeling that she's a daring entrepreneur and a successful business woman too.

The best part about this parcel is that Bari sent it my way to share it with the quilters and crafters that read this blog in South America. I'll be taking these fabrics with me to Argentina hoping to share it from there. Maybe I can send out little packages of fabrics to some of you and we can make something together! I'm already thinking about the best way to do this…

Hace unos dia recibí un lindísimo paquete de telas. Eran toda una muestras de telas de la línea "Paris Apartment" de la diseñadora de telas Bari J. Si ustedes ya han tenido la oportunidad de usar estas telas en algún proyecto entonces ya saben de lo que estoy hablando. Estas son unas telas preciosas de algodón puro, muy lindas en verdad. Bari J. es una talentosa diseñadora de telas y patrones de costura. Supe de ella vía Twitter y podría decir que se trata de una empresaria muy emprendedora y exitosa.

Lo mejor acerca de este paquete de telas es que Bari me las mando para compartirlas con las lectoras que leen mi blog en el cono sur. Me llevaré  estas telas a la Argentina y las repartiré desde allá. A lo mejor la puedo repartir en paquetes pequeños  y mandárselos a algunas de ustedes para hacer algún proyecto conjunto!! Estaré pensando en la mejor manera de hacer esto y si tienen alguna sugerencia no duden en comentar. Gracias Bari por compartir estas telas deliciosas con nosotras. Day 44: A messenger bag for her/Dia 44: Un bolso para ella

Today is Clara’s 11th birthday. It’s hard for me to realize that she’s no longer a little girl. It feels like just yesterday she was that little baby that kept me in labor for a little more that 24hrs. She definitely has a mind of her own, a really good one too. Not that she’s my daughter but she is quite a pleasant child.
We’re still in Chicago. Today finalized our Argentine paper work, and then the birthday celebration started: we took a water taxi to the Navy Pier. We had a great time browsing through the little shops. We had hotdogs for lunch. Then the girls and their dad got a ride on the ferris wheel. Then pool at the hotel, and dinner at the Rainforest Café which I’d say was very entertaining for the girls.

As far a presents go, I just manage to make her this messenger bag that she requested long ago. I recycled an old pair of my husband blue jeans, the matching fabric is a fabric that Clara picked out at our LQS with out knowing that it was for her.
For the making of it I used two different patterns and some common sense. There's lot of room for improvement in the making of this messenger bag but for now it is what it is, and she loves it :)

I’ll keep it short for now but there are many things I really want to share with you. Maybe next time.

Hoy estamos celebrando el cumpleaños de mi hija Clara, cumple 11. Es tan difícil para mi darme cuenta de que ya no es una niñita chiquita... definitivamente se está convirtiendo en su propia persona, con convicciones propias. No es que sea mi hija pero realmente es una persona muy agradable.
Todavía estamos en Chicago. Hoy finalizamos todo el papeleo para la mudanza. Después tomamos un taxi acuático para ir al Navy Pier. La pasamos super viendo las tienditas. Comimos perros calientes para el almuerzo y después ellas se subieron a la rueda de la fortuna con el papá. Luego a la alberca (piscina) y por último fuimos a cenar al Rainforest Café, super entretenido para las niñas.
En cuanto a regalos, solo le pude hacer este bolso que ella me pidió desde hace mucho tiempo. Reciclé un para de jeans viejitos. La otra tela que le puse, es una tela que ella misma escogió en la tienda de quilts sin saber que era para su bolso. Para hacer este bolso usé dos  patrones diferentes y un poco de sentido común. Creo que todavía hay muchas cosas que se podr ían ser mejorados en cuanto al bolso, pero por ahora se quedara así y ella le encantó.
Esto es todo por ahora, tengo muchas cosas para contar y mostrar, pero ya será en otro momento.

The countdown/La cuenta regresiva

The count down has started. We’re 45 days away from our departure, and I have to get really organized to get everything that gets to need to be done: done.  I’m writing this post while the hub is driving to Chicago, IL. We’ll be visiting the Argentine embassy to get our residence papers. A few random things:

- We both have been doing paperwork since June.
- Every document needs to be notarized, sealed by the correspondent county clerk and the apostilled by the office of state department of  state were the document was emitted.
- We are going through this process with 10 documents with apostilles from two states.
- My six year old is so excited about the moving that she's reading quite easily in Spanish. She’s totally in love with Maria Elena Walsh's poems and songs.
- We’ll be celebrating my oldest girl 11 b-day in Chicago. And I have a handmade present for her in my suitcase.
- I’m going to give cross stitching when done with this post with a pattern from this site, thanks to the encouragment of Amanda AKA  @heyporkchop

La cuenta regresiva ha empezado, estamos a 45 días de nuestra partida y tengo que organizarme muy bien para lograr tener todo listo. Estoy escribiendo este post mientras mi esposo maneja hacia Chicado, Illinois. Estaremos visitando la embajada Argentina para tramitar nuestras residencia en dicho país. Unas cuantas cosas para contar:
- Hemos estado juntando documentos desde Junio de este anio.
- Cada documento esta notarizado, sellado por el condado correspondiente y apostillado en el estado de emisión.
- Estamos haciendo este trámite con 10 documentos apostillados por dos estados diferentes.
- Mi hija de seis años está tan emocionada con los planes que se ha empezado a leer en Español fantásticamente y está fascinada con las canciones y poemas de Maria Elena Walsh.
- Estaremos celebrando el cumpleaños numero 11 de mi hija mayor durante este viaje y le tengo un regalo hecho a mano en mi maleta.
- Ahora que acabe este post, voy a intentar hacer un bordado de punto de cruz. El patrón de bordado es de este lugar y convecida por Amanda alias @heyporkchop.

Getting ready!

As the day of our departure comes closer I've tried to find some time to organize my fabrics and sewing supplies, and to make lists of things to buy, and to match fabrics for future projects in my "spare time" if any…

This week I cut the left over fabrics from my SGQ to make the bias tape for it. I decided to go all colorful with the hand quilting. I just have to sandwich this baby, and trace the quilting pattern on top. Hopefully, I'll do that at the next Sew-in session of the A2 MQG. Then it will go to the bottom of my luggage and travel with me. I'm also cutting as many shells as possible to keep working on my shells quilt too. And I'm also packing a few embroidery patterns to stitch a bit while the rest of our moving gets to Argentina.

In terms of fabric I'm trying to make sure I have every set with the matching partners. For that I'm buying a bit of solids for each bundle and let's hope it's enough for anything I plan to make in the future.

This week I also used my 40% off JoAnn's coupon and got a bolt of interfacing for purse and bag sewing.  And I'm also planning on buying some white Kona.

Can you tell I'm getting anxious?? How about some help here, what do you think I should pack to keep sewing quilts in Argentina??

La fecha de nuestra partida hacia Argentina se va acercando, he tratado de  organizar mis telas, escribir listas de cosas por comprar y de combinar telas para proyectos futuros. Todo esto en mi "tiempo libre" que no ha sido mucho.

Anoche corté las tiras para hacer el biés de mi SGQ de las telas que me sobraron de este proyecto. También decidí que el quilteado va a ser de colores. Solo me faltar hacer el sandwich de telas y trazar el patrón de quilteado. Espero poder hacer eso en mi próxima sesión de costura con las chicas del MQG. Después lo guardaré al fondo de mi maleta para llevarlo conmigo durante el viaje. También estoy cortando tantas piezas como me sea posible para seguir trabajando en este shells quilt y pienso  empacar unos cuantos bordados para coser un poquito mientras llega nuestra mudanza a Córdoba. 

En cuanto a tela, me estoy asegurando de que cada juego tenga todos los colores necesarios para combinar. Para eso estoy comprando un poquito de colores sólidos esperando tener suficiente para mis futuros proyectos. Esta semana utilicé mi cupón 40% de descuento de JoAnn's y me compré un rollo entero de pellón para hacer bolsos. También espero comprar algo de tela blanca de Kona.

Se nota que estoy ansiosa?? Que tal me dan una mano y me ayudan a pensar que mas debo empacar para seguir cosiendo quilts en Argentina.
