Three Kitchen Fairies

Bijouterie wrap/ Envuelto de bisutería

Before our long trip, I realized I needed to organized a bit  my "bijouterie." I also found the girls have a big collection of baptism necklaces that they don't even wear but I still wanted to save for them.

This bijouterie wrap was made right on the day the movers came to pack us up. I asked them to pack my sewing room last and they kindly concurred. I started this project by making a 19”X19” mini-quilt, with the idea that mini-quilts can be tuned into almost anything.

I used one of my favorite fabrics for this project: Parisville by Tula Pink. I also cut a bit of Timeless Treasures Crosshatch in Lime and a few scraps left from my Shades of Gray Project. For the binding, I cut an actual bias tape, the diagonal way.

My favorite part of the Parisville fabric is the heads on "Cameo", I fussy cut them, and I strategically placed them on the front.

I really like how it turned out, the zipper pocket came very handy to store a couple of watches as well.

 

Justo antes de empezar nuestro viaje, me di cuenta de que necesitaba organizar alguna de mi bisutería para traer conmigo, así como también las cadenitas bautizo de mis hijas; que aunque no las usan todavía quería guardarlas y traerlas conmigo.

Empecé este proyecto justo el día que la companía de mudanza empezó a empacar mi casa. Les pedí a los embaladores que dejaran mi cuarto de costura para el final y accedieron amablemente.

Comencé este proyecto haciendo un mini-quilt de 19” x 19”, con la idea de que mini-quilt pueden convertirse en cualquier cosa. Usé una de mis telas favoritas: Parisville de Tula Pink. También corté un poquito de Timeless Treasures Crosshatch en color lima y usé unos retazos que me quedó de mi projecto de “Shades of Gray” (en tonos grises) El biés fue cortado diagonalmente esta vez.

Mi parte favorita de Parisville son la cabezas en "Cameo", así que las corté estratégicamente para usarlas en la parte de enfrente de mi "envuelto de bisutería".

Me encantó como quedó, el bolsillo con cierre estuvo muy a mano para guardar un par de relojes también.

Getting settled/Estableciéndonos

As we're settling in our new town, we're starting with new routines; shifting into the South American life style. The rhythm of the daily life is slow compared to the North American way of living. It's so laid back. Here people take their time to get things done taking pleasure in casual conversations while getting any given task finally done. I'm happy to report that it's all coming back naturally to me. I feel at home, after all, I was born into this culture only in a different country not to far from here.

The busiest part of the day is the morning when most of our to-do list gets done before the businesses and the public offices are closed for lunch. Being lunch the main meal of the day (around 2 PM) gives me the freedom to enjoy most of the afternoon working on my hand quilting project while the girls play around me. We also have plenty of time to go site seeing around the city.

Another bonus at this time, is that my MIL is living with us, which means that the house chores are divided between the two of us. Do you catch me drift ;) Yes!! free babysitting at night!!

Hemos empezado con nuevas rutinas mientras nos establecemos en esta nueva ciudad. Estamos cambiando al estilo de vida Sudamericano. El ritmo de vida en esta ciudad es totalmente diferente al estilo de vida Norteamericano, super relajado. Acá la gente se toma su tiempo para hacer las cosas mientras que al mismo tiempo conversan casualmente de cualquier cosa y finalmente terminan con lo que se suponía que estaban haciendo. Con mucha alegría reporto a ustedes que todo este ritmo está 'floreciendo' en mi naturalmente. Me siento como en casa, después de todo, yo nací en esta cultura pero en otro país no muy lejos de aquí.

 

Quilteado a mano

 

La parte mas ocupada del día es la mañana, es entonces cuando se hacen todos los mandados posibles antes de que el comercio y las oficinas del gobierno cierren para el almuerzo. Ya que el almuerzo es la comida principal del día (alrededor de las 2PM) tengo la libertad para trabajar en mis quilts por la tarde mientras las niñas juegan alrededor mío, así como también tenemos tiempo para pasear por la ciudad y visitar los lugares importantes.

Otra situación fantástica al momento, es que mi suegra se esta quedando con nosotros. Nos estamos repartiendo las labores del hogar. Me entienden?? Si!! tambien tenemos niñera por las noches!!

No more countdown/ No más cuenta regresiva

My countdown is finally finished. Last Friday, my family and I finally arrived in Cordoba, Argentina. Thank you so much for all the good vibes, the hugs, and positive comments you left me here, on Twitter, and Facebook. They kept me really positive, and feeling happy about our big quilting community. We lasted close to 24 hrs. in transit. By "we" I mean my family and also our cat; who became a great attraction as she was checked in at the airport, and the next day as she went five (or so) times around the baggage claim belt while we finished all the paper work at the immigration booth. We had an amazing welcoming committee that picked us up from the airport, and drove us to our new apartment. We were showered with attentions, and with as many hugs as possible to comfort us from such a long trip. Today was our first outing as a family. We were invited to the usual Sunday family get together by  a... family friend.

 

We were so warmly received that I have no words to tell you how pleasant it was to spend our Sunday eating delicious food, chatting, and watching my children and our friends' children play together in the yards adjacent to the lovely little house they live in.

We came back home feeling pampered, excited, and inspired. As for the girls; well, they were exhausted from playing hide and seek, claiming trees, and looking for snails.

Mi cuenta regresiva se acabó. El viernes pasado, mi familia y yo finalmente llegamos a Córdoba, Argentina. Muchísimas gracias por sus buenas ondas, sus abrazos, y los comentarios tan positivos en mis últimos posts, Twitter y en Facebook. Sus palabras me ayudaron mucho a mantenerme optimista y feliz de ser parte de nuestra comunidad de quilteras. Viajamos por casi 24 hrs. todos junto incluyendo a nuestra gatita, quien fué la gran atracción en los aeropuertos mientras la documentábamos; y a nuestra llegada mientras dió cinco vueltas (más o menos) en la banda del equipaje cuando nosotros haciamos los trámites en migración. Tuvimos un comité de bienvenida increíble que nos recogió del aeropuerto y nos llevó a nuestro nuevo departamento. Nos sentimos muy bien recibidos. Las atenciones de nuestros seres queridos fueron ilimitadas, así como tambien lo fueron la cantidad de abrazos y cariño.

Hoy tuvimos nuestra primera invitación para reunirnos a comer en un tradicional domingo familiar. Fuimos cálidamente recibidos. Realmente no tengo palabras para describir lo bien que la pasamos comiendo un delicioso almuerzo, conversando y viendo jugar a las niñas con las niñas de la casa en el jardín que rodea la hermosa casa en la que viven nuestros amigos.

Volvimos a casa sintiéndonos muy mimados, contentos, e inspirados. Y las niñas... ellas volvieron exhaustas de jugar a las escondidas, de trepar árboles y de buscar caracoles.

Day 1!/ Día 1!

 A mixture of happiness, nervousness, excitement, and sadness was the mood of the day. I've gone from crying, to peaceful again, and back to crying, to exhausted.

Our home was packed in three days by the movers. And now our things are on their way to our new home.

The feeling of our empty house only invited me to thank God for all the good lessons learned while we lived there, and to pray to God for his blessing in our new adventure. The “to do” list to accomplish this goal (moving from the US to Argentina) was endless, just the last stretched took us up to five months to get everything done. During these five moths, our days started around 6 AM and finished around 11 PM. And if grays are caused by stress then I understand how's that I got so many lately. If not, well, then it's a coincidence... Still, the hardest part of all was saying bye to our deeply loved friends and family :(

Tomorrow is day “0”, we'll be traveling all the way south to Argentina. Hopefully, we'll stay there for a while.

Muchos sentimientos encontrados estuvieron presentes el día de hoy. Pasé de estar feliz, a estar nerviosa, después muy entusiasmada y otra vez triste. He pasado del llanto a la tranquilidad de ida y vuelta y ahora estoy exhausta.

Nuestra casa fué empacada en tres dias por el equipo de mudanza. Ahora nuestras cosas están en camino a nuestro nuevo hogar.

La sensación de la casa vacía fué como una invitación a la oración en la que le dí las gracias Dios por todas las cosas que aprendimos durante los ultimos años y también para pedir sus bendiciones en nuestra nueva aventura.

La lista de las cosas que tuvimos que hacer para lograr esta mudanza (de EEUU hacia Argentina) fué interminable. El último tramo nos tomo cinco meses en acabarlo y esos meses fueron de jornadas diarias de 6 AM a 11 PM. Y si las canas salen por estrés, entonces entiendo porque me salieron tantas en los últimos dias y sino entonces debe haber sido pura coincidencia... Aun así, la parte mas difícil de todo fué despedirnos de los amigos y la familia tan querida.

Mañana es el dia “0” y viajaremos a la Argentina esperando establecernos por un buen rato.

Day 10: Dancing in the rain/ Día 10: Bailando en la lluvia

Things are getting busier and busier around here. Nothing difficult, just lots of little tasks waiting to get finished. In the meantime, I take little breathers here and there. That's how I, at the very least, get to take some pictures. After all "Life's not about waiting for the storm to pass. It's about learning to dance in the rain!"

A medida que se acerca el día de nuestra partida estamos más y más ocupados. No son cosas difíciles de hacer, más bien es la cantidad de pequeños pendientes lo que lo vuelve difícil. Mientras tanto me tomo pequeños recreos para aunque sea tomar una que otra foto. Después de todo "la vida no es esperar que la tormenta pase, es aprender a bailar bajo la lluvia."

Day 14: round and round/ Día 14: vuelta y vuelta.

Breath, breath… I'm taking a moment to breath after a super busy day. 

I won't bore you to tears with my to-do list, but I'm still tempted to post it and see who can beat that. What I really want to show you are these quilting blocks I'm working on, because after all sewing is my thing.

Respira, respira…  me estoy tomando un minuto para respirar después de un día súper ajetreado. Como no los quiero aburrir, no les contaré todo lo que hice hoy ; aunque a decir verdad estoy tentada a publicar mi lista de cosas por hacer y ver quien me muestra una agenda mas llena y complicada. Lo que realmente les quería mostrar son estos bloques de quilt en los que he estado trabajando, ya que después de todo me encanta coser.

Day 15: Halloween is over/ Día 15: La noche de brujas se acabó

Hi there! I just realized that last Monday was our last Halloween, or at least for a couple of year. That's one of the American festivities that I'll miss the most beside the white Christmas. 

Out of early nostalgia I decided to sew a bit with some Halloween fabrics, and I made some spooky pot holders. I used inexpensive JoAnn's fabrics, this way I won't feel bad about using my pot holder in the kitchen.

I made three, a simple wonky star in the middle, a matching border. I used the special batting for pot holders, then I sewed them right sides together with the batting in the outside, I turned them inside out, and top stitched the edge. I took two of them to the MQG meeting, and I kept one for my homemade pot holder collection. I think they turned out really cute.

Hola!! Apenas me di cuenta que la Noche de Brujas del el lunes pasado fué nuestra última, o al menos por un par de años. "Halloween" es una de las festividades que mas voy a extrañar aparte de la  blanca Navidad. Solo por nostalgia que decidí coser algo con tela de Halloween e hice estas agarraderas.

Usé tela no muy cara de la tienda de telas JoAnn, así no me sentiré culpable de usarlas en la cocina. Hice tres agarraderas con una estrellas en el centro y un borde combinado. Les puse un relleno (guata/acolchado) especial para agarraderas. Cosí  los dos lados de las agarraderas con los lados correctos juntos y el relleno atrás de una de las tapas, después lo volteé al derecho y los cosí  por el borde.

Regalé dos de ellos en mi reunión de quilteras y me quedé con una para mi colección de agarraderas. Me parece que quedaron de los mas simpáticas!!

Day 17: International Quilt Market

Despite all the craziness going on in my life, I took a chance and joined in in the amazing world of Quilt Market in Houston, TX. It was the first time I traveled without my family and the nervousness took a toll on my health but I'll recover…

After my husband dropped me at the airport and I passed the check point I started feeling much better. All of the sudden I remembered that I was quite used to travel all by myself before having a big family…

How was it?? It was AMAZING!! definitely Quilt Market is not to be attended just once in a lifetime. It's quilt heaven!

Who did I meet? Lots of amazing people: Jan DiCintio, Sarah Fielke, Denise Schmidt, Jenean Morrison,  and Pat Bravo, also Annela Hoey and Cathy Gaubert among others.  I got to spend some time with Amy Ellis: she's such a nice sweet person. BTW, Quilt Festival is going on at the time so don't forget to visit Amy for tons of inspiration.

I met some Twitter friends such as Jackie Maxman @jmmaxman,  Sharon Pernes @Shapernes, Tiffany Lee @anthrpiensky, Cara Wilson from Talkin' Tuesdays, and Keli Faw from @drygoodsdesign.  

Looking at the marvelous booths I crossed paths with Cecilia Koppmann and I recognized her instantly. She's a well know Argentine quilter very much love by the Spanish speaking community of quilters in South America. I had previously exchanged a few words with her through her blog, and there we were!! Wow!! Can you tell I had a great time??

I still missed a few people that I'd love to meet with but as I tell you before, I don't think this will be my last and only time going to Quilt Market. In a [rather big] nutshell that was my weekend. The details will come little by little in the days to come, stay tuned!!

I came back home on Sunday happy to see my family, and feeling so inspired...

A pesar de la locura que es mi vida en este momento, me dí un chance y me uní con a todos aquellos que el fin de semana pasado estuvieron en Houston, Texas para visitar The International Quilt Market. Fué la primera vez que viajé sin mi familia y los nervios afectaron un poco mi salud pero seguro que me recuperaré…

Después de que mi esposo me dejó en el aeropuerto y pasé el chequeo me sentí mucho mas tranquila y recordé los tiempos en los que viajaba sola antes de tener familia.

Cómo estuvo? FANTASTICO!! Definitivamente Quilt Market no es para ir una sola vez en la vida, es un paraiso de telas!!

A quién conocí?? Cantidad de gente maravillosa como Jan DiCintio, Sara Fielke, Denise Schmidt, Jenean Morrison, Pat Bravo, Annela Hoey and Cathy Gaubert.

Tuve la suerte de pasar un rato muy agradable con la encantadora Amy Ellis. Por cierto, su Festival de Quilts (Quilt Festival) es esta semana. Visítenla por favor para que vean que cantidad de inspiración. También conocí a muchas amigas de Twitter como  Jackie Maxman @jmmaxman,  Sharon Pernes @Shapernes, Tiffany Lee @anthrpienthesky, Cara Wilson de "Talking Tuesday," Keli Faw @drygoodsdesign.

Entre los puestos de los expositores me encontré a Cecilia Koppmann y la reconocí al toque. Ella es una artista del quilt muy reconocida y muy querida por las amantes del quilt en Argentina y el mundo del quilt en español. Ya antes nos habíamos  contactado por la internet y miren en donde nos fuimos a encontrar!! Increíble!!

Con todo esto, siento que aun me faltó conocer a mucha gente, pero como les dije antes, no creo que Quilt Market sea algo para hacerse solo una vez en la vida, y no creo que esta haya sido mi primera y única vez. Así que este fué un resumen {bastante largo} de mi fín de semana, los detalles irán saliendo poco a poco, así que estén pendientes!!

Volví a casa sintiendo feliz de ver a mi familia y llena de inspiración.
