End of the year post/Post de fin de año

I got a reminder that my Flickr account was about to expire. I went to Flickr, and as usual, I started wondering around, and commenting in a few of your lovely pictures. There's never enough time to look at it all. I also took a moment to take a look at my crafting accomplishments of this year. To my surprise I finished: five quilts, eleven craft projects, four tutorials, and six embroidery projects. I also posted two recipes. Not bad for a crazy, busy year!!

But what I enjoyed the most was reading through all the comments, and all the interaction with other Flickr friends. This sure is a lovely, welcoming craft/quilt community, and although this was a tough year for me and my family, sewing has saved me from going insane. Every stitch and each one of your comments, tweets, e-mail, FB likes has brought me joy, and a chance to keep a bit of myself in this little space: thank you for reading, and for sharing your thoughts with me.

Hopefully, the upcoming year 2012 will be an easier year, with more time to create, and to spend chatting with you while sewing a new fun project.

I have lots of plans for 2012, I heard here and there that 2012 is going to be an awesome year for quilting!! So stay tuned!

In the meantime, receive a big hug from me, with all my best wishes for you in the New Year 2012. May all your [crafty] dreams come true! Happy New Year!! XO

Recibí un correo recondándome que tenía que renovar mi suscripción a Flickr. Así que me fuí a Flickr y como siempre empecé a divagar y a comentar en sus lindas fotos; nunca tengo suficiente tiempo para verlo todo. También me tomé un poco de tiempo en echarle un vistazo a todas mis fotos de este año. Estoy felizmente sorprendida de haber acabado: cinco quilts, once proyectos de costura, cuatro tutoriales, y seis proyectos de bordado. También subí dos recetas, nada mal para el año loco que he tenido! Pero lo que más disfruto son los cometarios y la interacción con todos los amigos en Flickr, es realmente una comunidad de artesamos y quilters fantástica y amorosa.

Este ha a sido un año muy ajetreado para mí y para mi familia, la costura me ha salvado de volverme loca. Cada puntada, así como cada uno de sus comentarios, tweets, correos, y “me gusta” en FB me han dado mucha alegría así como el chance de conservar algo de mi individualidad en este pequeño espacio: mil gracias por visitar mi blog, por sus cometarios y por compartir sus pensamientos conmigo.

Espero que el año entrante sea un poquito más fácil, con más tiempo para crear y para pasarla charlando con ustedes mientra cosemos algún proyecto nuevo.

Tengo muchos planes para el 2012, he oido que el 2012 va a ser un año maravilloso para el mundo de los quilts. Así que estén pendientes!!

Mientras tanto, les mando un gran abrazo con mis mejores deseos para el año nuevo. Que todos sus sueños se hagan realidad!! Feliz Año Nuevo 2012!! Besos y abrazos!!

Merry Christmas and a giveaway winner/ Feliz Navidad y la ganadora del sorteo

I've been trying to post for a few days, but it just doesn't come right. I guess if it doesn't happen I shouldn't force it. Maybe today is the day...

First things first: the winner of the SUCH design giveaway is Elena from Barcelona, Spain!! Thank you all so much for participating. I visited all the new sites in the comments and I love them all!! What a nice way to make new blog friends.

The Christmas spirit is finally getting to me, and although I have had lots of stuff to do (tons paper work) I've been trying to stitch a bit here and there.

Since our Christmas stocking are not here, I decided to make at least three new stocking for my girls. We adventured ourselves into this big city downtown, and found some lovely fabric stores, more of the kind you find here in South America, with very simple products, and a few cotton fabrics.

We bought some natural color cotton mix fabric, some who-knows-what kind of gingham, and some white cotton fabric to make these Christmas stocking. The embroidery is from “Feeling Stitchy” December stitch along. We sewed the stockings at a dear friend's house, then I gave them the finally touches. They make us feel homey, I know it's going to be a lovely Christmas. And just in case I don't come back before the 25^th: Merry Christmas to you all !!

 

He estado tratando de subir un post por días, pero solo no me sale; y si no sale pues, no sale y no lo forzaré. Tal vez hoy suceda...

Pero lo primero es lo primero: la ganadora del patrón de casitas de SUCH Desings es Elena de Barcelona, España. Gracias a todas por particpar!! Visité todos los nuevos blogs en los comentarios y me parecieron fantásticos; que manera tan linda de hacer nuevas amistades.

Finalmente estoy entrando en la onda Navideña y anunque he tenido muchísimas cosas que hacer (toneladas de papeleos) he tratado de coser unas cuantas puntadas acá y allá. Como nuestras botas navidenas no estan acá, decidí hacer aunque sea tres para mis niñas. Nos aventuramos y nos fuimos al centro de la ciudad y encontramos unas tiendas de telas de lo mas simpáticas, del tipo que se encuentran aca en Sudamérica con telas muy sencillas y un poquitito de telas de algodón.

Compramos un corte de tela mezclada con color natural, una tela cuadriculada de extraña procedencia y un corte de tela blanca de algodón.

El bordado es de la página de “Feeling Stitchy” December stitch along. Cosimos las botas en casa de una amiga muy querida y después le dimos los últimos toques. Este projecto nos hace sentir como en casa, ahora se que será una Navidad fantástica. Y en caso de que no me asome por acá antes del 25 déjenme desearles una muy feliz Navidad. Feliz Navidad a todos!!

Broken dishes tutorial/ Tutorial: platos rotos

This week I'm the guest blogger at Quiltjane's blog! I'm participating with at tutorial for her Desperate Housewife's list of quilt blocks. The block that I chose is "Broken dishes," appropriate, right? It's a traditional block. I just figured out how to make it an 8" finished block to match the Jane's list of 50 blocks.

Here we go:

Cut four 5 x 5 in. squares in two different fabric prints...

Now cut the four square pieces diagonally.

Sew your triangles into matching squares, iron press, and trim them into 4.5" squares.

Arrange your squares... and sew them in pairs making sure that the seams match nicely, and press again.

Pin the two rows together, matching the seams again, sew, and press.

Ta-da! and there you have it! a broken dishes block. This is a super easy block that you can make as a beginner's block, or as a quick to piece kind of quilt. I definitely have this block in my list of future quilt projects.

Esta semana estoy de invitada en el blog the Quiltjane en Australia! Estoy participando con un turorial para su lista de bloques llamada "Desperate Housewifes' list of blocks" (la lista de bloques de las amas de casa desesperadas..?) El bloque que escogí hacer se llama "Platos rotos" muy apropiado para la lista de Jane. Es un bloque tradicional, solo que yo lo ajusté en tamaño para que fuera un bloque de 8 pulgadas por 8 pulgadas igual que los otros bloques en la lista de 50 bloques que Jane está recopilando.

Aquí vamos.

Corta cuatro cuadrados de 5" por 5" de dos telas diferentes.

Ahora córtalos diagonalmente.

Cóselos en cuadrados otra vez tomando dos piezas triangulares diferentes. Plánchalos abiertos y asegurate de que sean cuadrados perfectos de  4.5" por lado.

Cose dos los bloquecitos de pares, asegurándote que las costuras embonen y después plancha las nuevas costura.

Con ayuda de alfileres, asegúrate de alinear las costuras de las dos mitades. Cose tu bloque y plancha la nueva costura.

Ahí lo tienes!! tu bloque de "platos rotos"!! Este es un bloque facilísimo que se puede hacer a nivel de principiante o también se puede usar para un quilt que quieras hacer muy rapidito. Definitivamente lo tengo en mi lista de quilts por hacer.

Christmas preparations/ Preparaciones navideñas

We're only fourteen days away from Christmas, and my Christmas spirit is having a hard time trying to kick in. Call it the warm weather, the stress, or being “homesick” but what's certain is that I have to do something. After all, most of the responsibility of creating wonderful childhood memories falls on me. In the end, it's me who has to come up with the Christmas crafts, the Christmas stories, and the Christmas food too. To make things worst, our Christmas decor in a container in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, and it will arrive right after the Holidays.

In the meantime, we bought the girls a purple Christmas tree, very shine indeed. And we're making our own paper decorations. So far we had made some origami wreaths with recycled magazines, and we also made some paper lanterns.

One of the websites I'm sure feel thankful for is Pinterest for the tons of inspiration, and links I've been able to find there. Hopefully, this week we'll start making some more Christmas decorations.

Estamos solo a catorce días de la Navidad y mi espíritu navideño se niega a aparecer. Dirán que es el estado del tiempo, el estrés, el estar extrañando la nieve... pero lo que si es cierto es que tengo que hacer algo para que sentirme inspirada. Después de todo, la responsabilidad de crear recuerdos memorables de la niñez en mis hijas cae mayormente en mí. El caso es que al final, soy yo la que tiene que inventarse las manualidades para que ellas hagan, seleccionar los cuentos, así como también tengo que planear la cena de Navidad y todas las cositas ricas que se comen en la temporada. Para colmo de males, todas mis decoraciones Navideñas están en un contenerdor en medio del Océano Atlántico y llegarán a tierra firme después de la fiestas decembrinas.

Mientras tanto, hemos comprado un árbol de Navidad morado, todo brilloso!! Y le hemos hecho algunas decoraciones de paper como coronas navideñas de origami con papel de revistas reciclado y tambien hicimos unas linternas chinas. Uno de mis websites favoritos es Pinterest. Estoy tan agradecida por la cantidad de inspiración que encontré. Esperamos hacer mas cositas esta semana.

Así que si tienen alguna idea que nos puedan compartir, cuénten! que se los voy a agradecer tanto.

A lovely giveaway from SUCH Designs/ Un regalo de SUCH Desings

The amazing experience of going to Quilt Market is still latent in my mind. I can't tell you how grateful I feel for having had the opportunity to go there, to get tons of inspiration, and to meet so many wonderful people. Among those talented ones, I had the opportunity to briefly meet Carry Bloomston from Such Desings.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

She was seating at her booth surrounded by her lovely crafts and patterns. I love her family approach in her crafts which permeates in her designs. She's artist that went from being a college educated artist to being a crafty mom; I can relate to that feeling... Her patterns look so friendly that they're hard to resist. I can imagine myself making her sweet houses pillow for my girls, knowing for sure that it would be loved until it comes apart. Well, after Quilt Market, I went back home with one of Carrie's patterns, for you.

La experiencia maravillosa de haber estado en Quilt Market todavía está latente en mi. No tengo palabras para describir lo agradecida que estoy de haber podido estar ahí, de sentir tanta inspiración y de haber conocido tanta gente maravillosa. Entre toda esta gente talentosa, tuve la oportunidad de conocer brevemente a Carrie Bloomston, la dueña y creadora de Such Desings

La encontré sentada en su puesto rodeada por sus hermosas creaciones y sus patrones. Me encanta como su onda familiera se trasluce en sus diseños. Ella es una artista plástica que pasó despues a ser una madre artesana; nos parecemos en ese detalle... Sus diseños son tan lindos y sencillos, que son difíciles de resistir. Claramente, me puedo imaginar haciendo este cojín de casitas segura de que sería bien recibido por mis hijas y amado hasta que no queden más que hebras de tela. Pues volví de Market con uno de los patrones de Carrie para ustedes.

Long time no see! I'm sure you can imagine what I've been up to. To tell you the truth, I never imagined this move would be this difficult. I'd good say that I'm a pro at self control but the last couple of weeks were a crazy emotional roller coaster. We have had good days and bad days: last week we got mugged, and far from feeling upset for the material lost, I felt frustrated at the thought that some things will never change. On the Christmas side of things, I find it really hard to feel the Christmas spirit when it's seventy something (Fahrenheit) degrees in here.

One of the good things that happen last weekend, is that we were included in the bi-monthly unloading of the produce. This is a family/community activity in which the produce is brought straight from the farms to be share among ten or so families to lower the costs and ensure freshness. Each crate of veggies is separated in as many piles as families there are to share in that day: no body takes advantage in any way. There was a strong sense of community, and of acceptance of each other as well.

This a picture of my veggie loot. Amazing, huh!?! I'll start saving jelly and marmalade jars, and reading my Ball Canning guide...

After getting our veggies, we weren't allowed to go back home. Instead, we stayed the whole afternoon and joined on the birthday celebration of one of the girls in the community.

I want to think that the good things surpass the bad things, and to try to keep myself on the positive side.

Qué de tiempo!! Seguro que se imaginan qué es lo que he estado haciendo. A decir verdad, jamás me imaginé que este cambio de pais fuera tan difícil. Diría que soy especialista en el control de mis emociones pero las últimas semanas han tenido muchos altibajos. Tenemos días buenos y días malos: la semana pasada nos robaron. Lejos de sentirme enojada por las pérdidas materiales, me sentí muy frustrada de pensar que algunas cosas nunca van a cambiar.

En cuanto al tema de la Navidad; es muy difícil ponerse en la onda Navideña a setenta y tantos grados Fahrenheit...

Por otra parte, también nos pasaron cosas buenas. La semana pasada fuimos incluidos en la repartición de la carga de un camión de verduras. Esta es una actividad que se lleva a cabo entre un grupo de familias, una pequeña comunidad. Se compra la verdura directo del productor para lograr un mejor precio y asegurar la frescura de los productos. Cada caja de vegetales o frutas es repartido equitativamente en tantas pilas como el número de familias que estén particiapando de la compra: por pieza y sin fijarse en el peso o en el tamaño de cada verdura, nadie se aprovecha de la situación. Fué hermoso ser testigo del sentido de comunidad y de la aceptación entre unos y otros.

Vieron la foto de mi pila de verduras?? Increíble!! tengo que empezar a guardar los frascos de mermeladas y conservas y también empezaré a leer mi libro de envasados “Ball”

Después de toda esa repartición, no nos pudimos ir a casa ya que fuimos invitados a quedarnos a celebrar el cumple de una de la chiquitas de una de las familias.

Quiero pensar que las cosas buenas son más que las cosas malas para seguir concentrándome en lo positivo.
