Wow!! Last week was a very busy week for me. I had family visiting, the blog-anniversary giveaway was finally posted along with a little survey that required some thinking, planning and executing. After being a little bit shy about my birthday for years, these year I decided to celebrate it twice: right on Wednesday with family and neighbors, and another celebration on Saturday with some more lovely friends I've made in the last eight months. It was fun but by Sunday I was exhausted.

Wow! La semana pasada estuvo de locos: hice cosas sin parar: tuve familia visitándonos, subí el post del sorteo de aniversario del blog con una encuesta incluída que requirió de tiempo planeándolo y escribiéndolo. Este año, después de haber sido tímida acerca de mi cumple por muchos años, lo celebré dos veces. El día del mi cumple lo celebré con familia y mis vecinos, y después el sábado lo volví a celebrar con amistades muy queridas que con los que he compartido muchos momentos en los últimos ocho meses. Nos divertimos mucho y para el domingo estaba yo exhausta.

I'm finally well rested, and ready to let the creative juices run freely... and to confront my tod-do list as well :P

Hoy, felizmente descansada, me propongo dejar la creatividad volar libremente... y también confrontar la larga lista de cosas por hacer :p

The second thing I have to show you is this yummy bundle of Kona Solid scraps!! I gave the international delivery a try, which can be tricky in this side of the world, and it worked!! I actually thought it was lost but the delivery person told me that the delay (it took three weeks) was caused by a transportation union strike, otherwise it would have been here earlier. Thankfully, I still have enough fabric to sew a few more projects ;) But to tell you the truth, I did it because I needed to know myself before encouraging others to buy, right? 

La segunda cosita que les quiero enseñarles es este paquetito de Kona Solids que me llegó en el correo!! Probé el correo internacional, el cual es todo un tema en este lado del mundo y funcionó. Tomo tres semanas para que llegara, yo lo daba por perdido. Me explicaba el cartero que la huelga de transportistas retrasó el envio, de no ser por ese contratiempo el paquete hubiese llegado más pronto. Creo que todavía tengo suficiente tela para unos cuantos proyectos más. A decir verdad, pedí este envio porque necesitaba estar segura de que los paquetes llegaban y así poder recomendarles la compra de estas telas maravillosas y no estar hablando de ello sin ningún sentido.

Happy Blog anniversary and a giveaway/ Feliz aniversario y un sorteo!!

Four years ago I, with help of some encouraging friends and the hubs, started writing this blog, and I can tell you that it has only brought me hapiness. My blog has not only help me to learn so much more than quilting, sewing, embroidery, computer skills, image processing. It has also helped me improve my English which is my second language. But what I like the most about this little space is that it has brought a load of blog friends into my life with whom I connect at so many levels, and I think that's the best part. For all these reason, and as a way to thank you all for your visits, your always encouraging comments, your personal e-mails, I want to celebrate this anniversary with a amazing giveaway.

Hace cuatro años y a mucha insistencia de mis amigos y mi esposo, empecé a escribir este blog. Este pequeño espacio me hecho tan feliz. Mi blog no solo me ha ayudado a aprender más de quilts y de costura, de bordados, de computación y procesamiento de imágenes. Handmade cards/ Tarjetas hechas en casa

I saved every little bit of scraps from the making of my last quilt. I loved how pretty they looked together and I kind of knew there will be a time when I might regret throwing them away. 

Next week my BIL and his lovely wife will leave Argentina to go to the USA. They'll attend graduate school. Before leaving they decided to spend the whole week with us and the girls here in Cordoba. We're having a great time hosting them, great food, lots of music. She and I chit chat all day long, and the "thank you note" conversation took her by surprise. The giving of a thank you note, a get well card, a greeting card is one of those American traditions that I cherished the most, it's such a special touch to any relationship.

Guardé todos los pedacitos de tela que me quedaron de mi último quilt. Me encantaba lo hermoso que se veían todos juntos y sabía que me arrepentiría luego de haberlos botado.

Resulta que la semana entrante mi cuñado y su esposa dejan la Argentina para continuar sus estudios de posgrado en EEUU y antes de irse decidieron pasar una semana con nosotros acá en Córdoba. Estamos muy contentos de tenerlos en casa, hemos comido rico, hemos disfrutado linda música... Ella y yo podemos pasarnos las horas platicando y en esas conversaciones salió el asunto de las tarjetas de agradecimiento. El dar una tarjeta de agradecimiento, de buenos deseos, o solo para saludarse y hacer saber a alguien que no ha sido olvidado es un lindo gesto muy tradicional en EEUU. Es una de esas buenas costumbres de los americanos que a mi me encanta, le da un toque especial a cualquier relación...

I tought it would be nice to make a few cards for her in case she need them. Luckily, she like them. 

For this little project I used , beside the fabric scraps, some printmaking paper scraps (but it can be any card stock,) and my sewing machine for some fancy stitching. Go ahead, get your fabric scraps out, and make a few cards for any ocassion. You'll love them!

On a different note: Tomorrow is my b-day and my blog anniversary. Please come back for a lovely celebration :)

Pensé que sería lindo que se llevara unas tarjetas por si las llegaba a necesitar. Por suerte, le gustaron.

Para este proyecto usé, aparte de los retacitos de tela, retazos grandes de papel para grabado (en realidad podría ser cualquier cartoncillo) y mi máquina de coser con diferentes puntadas. Así que las invito a que saquen los retacitos para hacer estas tarjetas que en realidad sirven para cualquier ocasión. Les va a encantar como quedan!!

Pasando a otro tema, mañana es my cumpleaños y el aniversario de mi blog también. Por favor vuelvan mañana para una linda celebración :)

47 blocks/ 47 bloques

Of all things to make and do this week, I decided I'll finished my aguylo/solid blocks, and I did!!

De todas las cosas que tengo que hacer esta semana, decidí que iba a terminar mis bloques de aguayo y Kona solids y lo hice!!

I'm happy I ordered just enough fabric. I used it all,  but I didn't run out of it before finishing my blocks. I see why is that lots of quilters are so in love with the solid colors fabrics, they're a blast to work with; too bad I don't have a LQS around here 'cause I'll definitely go get more of these Kona solids.

Felizmente ordené suficiente tela; la usé casi toda y me alcanzó justito para todos mis bloques. Ahora me doy cuenta porque las quilteras estan tan enamoradas de estas telas sólidas, es fascinante trabajar con ellas. Lástima que no tengo una tienda de telas para quilt cerca porque sino ya estaría yo ahí comprando más de estos Kona Solids

Calavera

I finished this Calavera embroidery project this past weekend!! It's one of Carina's embroidery patterns available at her site Polka and Bloom. I've been wanting to embroidery a t-shirt for a long time. I tried embroidering on a t-shirt  in the past, and I can tell that it was a bit hard to control the stretchiness of the fabric. 

Terminé este bordado de Calavera el fin de semana pasado!! Es un patrón de bordado de Carina en Polka & Bloom. Había querido bordar una camiseta desde hace mucho, lo intenté hace un tiempo pero me intimidó la elasticidad de la tela que lo hacía un poco difícil de controlar.

 

I was able to make other than back stitches; I used a bit of split stitch and the button hole stitch for the earings. The colors I picked out are different to the colors Carina used in her Calavera. I just used what I have available. 

Pude hacer otras puntadas aparte del punto atrás; hice un poco de 'split stitch',  y el punto de ojal para los aretes de la calavera. Los colores que escogí son diferentes a los que Carina usó en su calavera, usé los hilos que tenía disponible.

 

The pattern has lots of details, which gives the finished project a lovely texture too. Now that I know how it goes, I'll definitely embroider a couple more of t-shirts.

Este patrón tiene cantidad de detalles lo cual le da al proyecto terminado una textura hermosa. Ahora que ya sé como bordar en camisetas voy a tener que bordar un par más.

 

 

Pruritus

That long week of 'vacation food' is paying back. Believe me, I ate all the good food I could, including fried empanadas. This week I got a sudden rash on my face that was so itchy that I had to call the doctor, and she came to see me at my own home!! Just like when I was a little girl! The diagnosis was either a food allergy or food poisoning. I was prescribed some meds., and I'm expected to eat diet free of allergens which is almost impossible btw. Today I gave this [organic] lentil soup recipe a try. It was pinned on my "Yum" board in Pinterest. It was really good.

Parece ser que la semana de vacaciones y de comer en restaurantes me afectó un poco. Creanme, comí cosas deliciosas, incluyendo empanadas fritas. Todos esos abusos los estoy pagando esta semana con un salpullido muy finito en la cara que me produce mucha picazón. Llamé al médico y vino a la casa!! como cuando era niña! El diagnóstico: o una alergia o intoxicación; me recetó unas medicinas y me mandó una dieta ligera y libre de alimentos que causen alergia, lo cual es casi imposible. Hoy probé de hacer esta receta de sopa de lentejas orgánicas, el enlace lo tenía en uno de mis muros del Pinterest. Quedó deliciosa!!

I also served some [organic] bread, and [organic] gouda cheese for lunch but I did have any cheese. I limited myself to take a picture a be happy with it. Hopefully, the 'pruritus' will go away soon.

Lo serví con pan [orgánico] integral casero y queso gouda [orgánico] para el almuerzo, me contuve de comer queso, solo me limité a tomarle una fotito. Espero que el 'pruritus' se me quite pronto. 

Quilty update/ Retomando este quilt

Before our family vacation I started a new colorful, and very South American looking quilt. I managed to sew the first 9 blocks out of the 42 blocks I'm planning to make. Yesterday, I was able to retake were I left, and I only have 10 more blocks to go. Not bad at all I think. Let me show you some of my favorite blocks...

Antes de irnos de vacaciones empecé un quilt muy colorido con un estilo muy Sudamericano. Logré coser los primero 9 bloques de los 42 que planeé coser. Ayer retomé este proyecto y ahora solo me faltan 10 bloques más para terminar, tiempo record!! Les muestro algunos de mis bloques favoritos...

I'm really enjoying making these blocks. They're made in a log cabin kind of arrange. Hopefully, I'll finish my blocks by the end of the week. You can see a couple more of blocks on my Flickr photostream just in case you want to see a few more ;)

Me encanta hacer estos bloques, los estoy haciendo estilo log cabin. Espero acabar todos mis bloques para el fin de semana. Colgué un par de fotos más de estos bloques en mi Flickr por si tienen ganas de ver más ;)

We're back!! Volvimos!!

Here the schools are having a two week winter break, and we took the opportunity to take a nice vacation. We went to the city of Rosario, and to the capital city of Argentina: Buenos Aires. I've never been to Rosario before so this was my first time, and I love it. Buenos Aires has never stopped being one of my favorite [big] cities. For me, going to Buenos Aires is never a disappointment.

Por acá estamos de vacaciones de invierno, así que tomamos esta oportunidad para irnos de vacaciones. Esta vez fuimos a Rosario y a Buenos Aires: la hermosa capital argentina. Nunca había estado en Rosario y me encantó estar ahí. Bueno Aires es una de las grandes ciudades que más me gustan, creo que jamás me desilusionará.

We visited the Buenos Aires Zoo. The animal exhibitions have a nice antique flare; I think they look a lot like a Curious George picture book...

Visitamos el Zoológico de Buenos Aires. Es un zoológico hermoso con un tono antiguo, como de cuentito de Curious George...

 

... the alpaca was one of my favorite animals this time. This one looks particularly aristocratic.

... la alpaca fue uno de mis animales favoritos en esta visita, luce como todo un aristócrata.

We also visited a big book store that 'lives' inside an old theather.

Visitamos una librería hermosa que vive dentro de viejo teatro.

We had a guided visit to the Teatro Colón. This old, beautiful, historic building was full of stories. Like the one about the little covered black windows underneath the balconies. I'd have never imagined that those were the spots reserved for widows. Who, in the old times (the theater was inagurated in 1908,) were not supposed to be seing in public during their mourning but still wanted to attend the opera, funny, hu!! The widowers of course did not have to hide at any point of their mourning. We visited the presidential balcony located right next to the stage; therefore, serving its social purpose.

Tuvimos también una visita guida por el Teatro Colón. Este hermosos y antiguo edificio histórico está lleno de historias. Jamás me imaginé que las rejitas negras de abajo de los balcones fueron reservadas para las viudas para no ser vistas en sociedad durante su luto... estamos hablando de 1908 cuando el teatro fue inagurado. Por supuesto los viudos andaban libremente por el teatro. Visitamos el palco presidencial que se encuentra justo junto al escenario cumpliendo así con la función social del teatro. En la parte más alta del teatro es donde va la gente parada y la llaman "el gallinero" y aun así, se dice que es donde mejor se escuchan las obras que se presentaban en el teatro.

In Rosario we visited the important historic monuments...

En Rosario visitamos los monumentos históricos...

 

The Castagnino Museum which was exhibiting a huge collection of graphic art. My favorite part was the art of Mele Bruniard, a huge collection of woodcuts.

El Museo Castignino que está teniendo una exibición de muy intersante de arte como medio de comunicación social que incluye una gran colección de xilografía. Mi parte favorita fue la colección de xilografías de Mele Bruniard.

 

And during the road trip I sure had a handy/stitchy project. This one of Carina's embroidery patterns. I'm stitching in on a T-shirt for one of the girls. I love this pattern, it reminds me of my years in Mexico.

We're back now, and we still have one more week of vacation of enjoy each other :)

Y durante el viaje llevé un proyectito a mano. Este es un patrón de bordado de Carina. Lo estoy bordando en una camiseta para una de las chicas. Me encanta este patrón, me recuerda tanto de mis años en México.

Así que ya estamos de vuelta y todavía nos queda una semana más para disfrutarnos :)
