Happy Blog anniversary and a giveaway/ Feliz aniversario y un sorteo!!

Four years ago I, with help of some encouraging friends and the hubs, started writing this blog, and I can tell you that it has only brought me hapiness. My blog has not only help me to learn so much more than quilting, sewing, embroidery, computer skills, image processing. It has also helped me improve my English which is my second language. But what I like the most about this little space is that it has brought a load of blog friends into my life with whom I connect at so many levels, and I think that's the best part. For all these reason, and as a way to thank you all for your visits, your always encouraging comments, your personal e-mails, I want to celebrate this anniversary with a amazing giveaway.

Hace cuatro años y a mucha insistencia de mis amigos y mi esposo, empecé a escribir este blog. Este pequeño espacio me hecho tan feliz. Mi blog no solo me ha ayudado a aprender más de quilts y de costura, de bordados, de computación y procesamiento de imágenes. Mi blog también me ha ayudado a mejorar mi inglés (que es mi segundo idioma). Pero lo que más me gusta acerca de este espacio es que me ha conectado con cantidad de amigos virtuales con los que comparto los mismos intereses.

Organics/ Orgánico

Even when there are many things to enjoy here in Cordoba, there still are things that we miss from Michigan. One of those is the availability of organic food. I won't go over the whole debate of transgenic vs. organic because this post would be endless if I do so, but what I can tell you is that in our experience going from organic back to transgenic food was mind bugging as we could tell by the taste of our food, and by the labels that something was definitely not right.

Little by little we're finding our way around here, and it turns out that the consumption of organic food is a fairly new trend here. Although there aren't organic food stores here, little comunities here and there organize themselves to buy truck loads of organic food that is later divided up in a food co-op style, the same way the produce load is shared every other week.

I'm happy to report that my family participated in one of these organic food co-ops that gets together only twice a year for this event. Last weekend, and after much organization, our loot of organic goodness arrived. We went to our “organic food host's” home, and there we opened and divided up the twenty something kilograms bags of grains, sugar, flour, wheat, dry fruits. Three hours later everybody was kissing each other good bye until next time with our vehicles loaded with the best food and our heart also filled with the goodness of a well spent afternoon.

This is the first of many breads that are to be made in this home. Believe me, I never valued the food we put on our table this much. The fact that getting our organic food requires so much organization makes less turn into more. At this point I truly believe that eating organic is not only a matter of personal choice: it's a community thing, even if you buy at your local food co-op or organic supermarket. It's a way to support local economies. Buying organic foor creates a bigger demand of organically grown products. It creates healthy eating habits in our family. And although consuming organic food may represent a sacrifice economycally, it definitely is an investment in health and peace of mind.

 

Aún cuando hay tantas cosas para disfrutar acá en Córdoba, todavía extrañamos otras tantas de Michigan. Una de esas cosas es la disponibilidad de comida orgánica. No voy a hablarles acerca del debate de la comida transgénica versus la comida orgánica, eso sería un post interminable. Lo que sí les puedo decir es que la experiencia de ir de orgánico a transgénico fué para pensarse, el gusto de la comida es diferente y las etiquetas nos decían también que algo estaba básicamente mal.

Poco a poco estamos encontrándole la vuelta al asunto de la comida y parece ser que esto de comer orgánico no es tan popular acá pero definitivamente se está dando como una nueva alternativa. Aunque no hay supermercados "orgánicos", hay pequeñas comunidades que se organizan para comprar camiones cargados de comida orgánica para despuer dividir la compra en su comunidad, algo estilo cooperativa; de la misma manera en que se divide las verduras cada quince días.

Les cuento que este mes participamos de una de estas compras la cual se realiza solo dos veces al año. El fin de semana pasado, después de mucha organización llegó nuestra carga de comida orgánica. Fuimos al reparto a la casa de la organizadora de nuestro grupo y abrimos bolsa y bolsa de granos, harinas, semillas, azúcar, trigo y frutas secas. Tres horas mas tardes nos despedimos con nuestros autos cargados de cosas deliciosas y con nuestros corazones también llenos de felicidad por haber pasado una linda tarde.

Este es el primero de muchos panes que se harán en esta casa con esos productos. Creo que nunca le había dado tanto valor a la comida que ponemos en nuestra mesa. El hecho de que conseguir comida orgánica requiera de tanta organización hace que menos sea más. Me parece que hoy en día comer orgánico no es solo una asunto de decisión propia sino también un asunto de comunidad, incluso si compran comida orgánica en un supermercado o en una cooperativa. Al comprar comida orgánica ayudamos a los pequeños productores y a la economía local ya que se crea mayor demanda de estos productos. Al mismo tiempo que se crean buenos habitos alimenticios en la familia. Y aunque consumir productos orgánicos representa para muchos un sacrificio económico, les aseguro que comer saludable es una inversión en la salud física y mental.

Couple of weeks ago we visited the flea market in downtown Cordoba. It was the first time We went to that part of town, and I found it incredibly interesting, colorful, and somehow bohemian.

The first stall we visited was full of antiques. Most of them with the European flare of the best Argentine times. I was in the in the look out for an thimble, old spools, or some other crafty antique; and what I actually found was this.

 

I couldn't reach it from were I was standing, so I asked the lady in charge to reach it for me so that I could take a look. I thought it was only an empty Singer tin box but to my surprise it had four different sewing machine foot, and a big needle. The seller had no idea what those were, and didn't even ask the price of that box after showing that much excitement. I told my husband, and he told me I should have buy it. Oh well, I said, maybe next time.

Next time did happen, and I couldn't find the box :(

I decided to ask for it, and it was brought out from under a bunch of other stuff. We bargained for the right price, because that's part of the fun and that's the way to buy here. The Singer box is mine now!!

I do have an antique Singer sewing machine still packed with the rest of the unpacked stuff. And I'm almost sure the foot shoud fit. I did spend some time finding what the foot were for, that's how I got to name the pieces in the picture. The needle gave me a hard time, after a while looking through the internet, I decided to ask my tweeps for some help. After an afternnon of tweets coming and going I can tell you that it's either a ball point needle or a needle punch for rug making.

Hace un par de semanas visitamos el mercado de pulgas de Córdoba. Fué la primera vez que fuimos a esa parte de la ciudad que me pareció increíblemente interesante, colorida y con un rico aire bohemio.

El primer puesto que visité estaba lleno de antigüedades, la mayoría con un aire europeo de los años dorados de la Argentina. Lo que en realidad estaba esperando ver en esos puesto era algún dedal o carretes de hilo antiguos. Lo que me encontré fué esto:

No lo podía alcanzar desde donde estaba y le pedí a la encargada que me dejara verlo. Pensé  que era solo una latita vacía de Singer pero para mi sorpresa tenía adentro cuatro piés de máquina de coser y una aguja que se ve que también va en la máquina. La vendedora no tenía idea de lo que se trataba y yo ni me molesté en preguntar el precio después de demostrar mi emoción estrepitosa acerca del hallazgo. Le conté a mi esposo y me dijo que debí haberla comprado, “tal vez la próxima vez” le contesté yo.

Si hubo “próxima vez”. No podía encontrar la caja hasta que le pregunté a la mujer del puesto por ella y la sacó de abajo de un montón de tiliches antiguos. Negociamos el precio como parte de la diversión y ahora la caja de Singer es mía.

Tengo una máquina de coser antigua de Singer también que todavía está empacada. Estoy casi segura de que los piés le quedan. Me pasé un buen tiempo buscando información e identificando las piezas en la internet, fué asi que logré poner los nombres en la foto, aunque no sé como se traduzcan al español. Esa se las debo. La aguja fué la que me dió un poco de problema encontrar, así que le pedí ayuda a mis amigos en twitter y después de una tarde de averiguaciones llegamos a la conclusión de que es una aguja de punta redondeada que al coser evitando romper los tejidos de la tela o tal vez es una aguja para hacer las vueltas de lana de las alfombras.

Qué les parece?? para quedarse con la cajita, no?

 

Pink Castle Fabrics contest/ Un concurso de Pink Castle Fabrics

After I read Katy's post about the fabric contest at Pink Castle Fabrics, I just couldn't help it but to create my own mosaic, and to give this contest a try. I went through the whole thirty something pages of fabrics in etsy, took a few screen shot of my favorite fabrics, and then put together this mosaic at Picnik. Después de leer el post the Katy acerca de este concurso de telas de Pink Castle Fabrics, no pude resistir las ganas de apuntarme con un mosaico de telas para ver si me gano mi propia combiancion (ese es el premio!!) Me repasé las treinta y tantas páginas de telas de Pink Catle Fabrics en etsy, tomé algunas fotos y después armé el mosaico en Picnik. A decir verdad, estoy encantada con esta combinación y si no me las gano igual me encantaría tenerlas en mis manos. El concurso sigue abierto; si quieren saber más visiten a Katy aquí.

First patchwork show in Cordoba/ Primera exposición the patchwork en Córdoba

When I knew I was moving to Cordoba, one of my biggest fears was not to find people with the same interest as me, namely fabrics and quilts. I surfed the internet until I found some lovely Cordobes ladies who were already involved in this kind of craft with much passion. Even when the kind of fabrics available in the north hemisphere are almost nonexistent in this part of the world, they're still able to create their beautiful quilts. These ladies found their way around the lack of quilting fabrics using  what is available here, and with the little bits that they can buy from international sellers (four fat quarters at the time I was told). I feel grateful I have been invited to join their group now organized as a community group on Facebook: Quilting y Patchwork en Córdoba which by the way keeps growing and growing. We'll be having our second meeting this week, and not only that, many of us will be joining Celia Ciuffo, Graciela Ferrari, and their students with some quilts in the first quilt show here in Cordoba at the CIART with the idea of expanding the knowledge of this amazing craft.

As you can see, the passion for patchwork and quilting can reach the further most ends of this planet. Isn't that amazing?? If you're in Cordoba please join us this upcoming Friday at 7PM at the CIART for the inauguration of such an important event.

 

Cuando supe que me mudaba a Córdoba, uno de mis grandes temores era el no encontrar gente con los mismos intereses como el patchwork, quilting, y las telas. Busqué en la internet hasta que encontré a las quilteras Cordobesas quienes estaban ya desarrollando este medio de arte textil con una pasión infinita a pesar de la escases de telas y materiales en este lado del mundo. Estas mujeres le han encontrado la vuelta al problema y crean sus hermosos quilts con la tela que se puede comprar acá y con pequeñas encomiendas que se compran en el extranjero (me cuentan que cuatro fat quarters a la vez es más o menos el límite). Me siento muy agradecida de haber sido invitada a unirme a su grupo: Quilting y Patchwork en Córdoba el cual ha sido organizado como una comunidad en Facebook que sigue creciendo. Estaremos teniendo nuestro segunda reunión como grupo esta semana. No solo eso sino que también muchas de nosotras fuimos invitadas a participar en la primera muestra de quilts en Córdoba en la CIART con Celia Ciuffo, Graciela Ferrari y sus alumnas a manera de expander el conocimiento de el quilt como tal y sus técnicas. Como pueden ver, la pasión por el patchwork y los quilts ha alcanzado los lugares mas reconditos del planeta, no es increíble?? Si están en cerca de Córdoba Capital por favor acérquense este viernes 16 de Marzo a la 7 PM a la CIART para celebrar la inaguración de tan importante evento.

Day 10: Dancing in the rain/ Día 10: Bailando en la lluvia

Things are getting busier and busier around here. Nothing difficult, just lots of little tasks waiting to get finished. In the meantime, I take little breathers here and there. That's how I, at the very least, get to take some pictures. After all "Life's not about waiting for the storm to pass. It's about learning to dance in the rain!"

A medida que se acerca el día de nuestra partida estamos más y más ocupados. No son cosas difíciles de hacer, más bien es la cantidad de pequeños pendientes lo que lo vuelve difícil. Mientras tanto me tomo pequeños recreos para aunque sea tomar una que otra foto. Después de todo "la vida no es esperar que la tormenta pase, es aprender a bailar bajo la lluvia."

Day 17: International Quilt Market

Despite all the craziness going on in my life, I took a chance and joined in in the amazing world of Quilt Market in Houston, TX. It was the first time I traveled without my family and the nervousness took a toll on my health but I'll recover…

After my husband dropped me at the airport and I passed the check point I started feeling much better. All of the sudden I remembered that I was quite used to travel all by myself before having a big family…

How was it?? It was AMAZING!! definitely Quilt Market is not to be attended just once in a lifetime. It's quilt heaven!

Who did I meet? Lots of amazing people: Jan DiCintio, Sarah Fielke, Denise Schmidt, Jenean Morrison,  and Pat Bravo, also Annela Hoey and Cathy Gaubert among others.  I got to spend some time with Amy Ellis: she's such a nice sweet person. BTW, Quilt Festival is going on at the time so don't forget to visit Amy for tons of inspiration.

I met some Twitter friends such as Jackie Maxman @jmmaxman,  Sharon Pernes @Shapernes, Tiffany Lee @anthrpiensky, Cara Wilson from Talkin' Tuesdays, and Keli Faw from @drygoodsdesign.  

Looking at the marvelous booths I crossed paths with Cecilia Koppmann and I recognized her instantly. She's a well know Argentine quilter very much love by the Spanish speaking community of quilters in South America. I had previously exchanged a few words with her through her blog, and there we were!! Wow!! Can you tell I had a great time??

I still missed a few people that I'd love to meet with but as I tell you before, I don't think this will be my last and only time going to Quilt Market. In a [rather big] nutshell that was my weekend. The details will come little by little in the days to come, stay tuned!!

I came back home on Sunday happy to see my family, and feeling so inspired...

A pesar de la locura que es mi vida en este momento, me dí un chance y me uní con a todos aquellos que el fin de semana pasado estuvieron en Houston, Texas para visitar The International Quilt Market. Fué la primera vez que viajé sin mi familia y los nervios afectaron un poco mi salud pero seguro que me recuperaré…

Después de que mi esposo me dejó en el aeropuerto y pasé el chequeo me sentí mucho mas tranquila y recordé los tiempos en los que viajaba sola antes de tener familia.

Cómo estuvo? FANTASTICO!! Definitivamente Quilt Market no es para ir una sola vez en la vida, es un paraiso de telas!!

A quién conocí?? Cantidad de gente maravillosa como Jan DiCintio, Sara Fielke, Denise Schmidt, Jenean Morrison, Pat Bravo, Annela Hoey and Cathy Gaubert.

Tuve la suerte de pasar un rato muy agradable con la encantadora Amy Ellis. Por cierto, su Festival de Quilts (Quilt Festival) es esta semana. Visítenla por favor para que vean que cantidad de inspiración. También conocí a muchas amigas de Twitter como  Jackie Maxman @jmmaxman,  Sharon Pernes @Shapernes, Tiffany Lee @anthrpienthesky, Cara Wilson de "Talking Tuesday," Keli Faw @drygoodsdesign.

Entre los puestos de los expositores me encontré a Cecilia Koppmann y la reconocí al toque. Ella es una artista del quilt muy reconocida y muy querida por las amantes del quilt en Argentina y el mundo del quilt en español. Ya antes nos habíamos  contactado por la internet y miren en donde nos fuimos a encontrar!! Increíble!!

Con todo esto, siento que aun me faltó conocer a mucha gente, pero como les dije antes, no creo que Quilt Market sea algo para hacerse solo una vez en la vida, y no creo que esta haya sido mi primera y única vez. Así que este fué un resumen {bastante largo} de mi fín de semana, los detalles irán saliendo poco a poco, así que estén pendientes!!

Volví a casa sintiendo feliz de ver a mi familia y llena de inspiración.

New tutorial: Wagon Wheel variation/Nuevo tutorial: variación del bloque de la rueda de carreta??

Two years ago I made a wagon wheel tutorial. That tutorial explains a somehow traditional method for the making of that traditional block. I did love making those blocks, I loved it  so much that I made a complete quilt with fourty something blocks appliqué by hand. As much as I loved it, I don't think that I'd make it all over again. But my love for curves and circles didn't stop there. I kept experimenting and learning about sewing curves. I made this, this and this out of love for curves and circles. 

Today, I want to show you how to make a wagon wheel in a totally different, and more simple way; maybe the cheater's way?? For this tutorial I used The Curve Master, and although it isn't absolutely necessary, I like [love!] the idea of not having to use so many pins.  But please, go ahead and choose the curve sewing method that better fits you. Here's this video tutorial, and this other tutorial.

I made eight of these blocks, and so far it's working wonderfully!

As usual, all the seams are 1/4"...

1. Down load your templates from here, print them, and cut them. I used transparent template plastic, but any other sturdy material can be used as well.

2. Choose six different fabric prints, trace your spokes, and cut them. Also cut 4 pieces A, and 4 pieces B from a background fabric. All the seam allowances have already being added to the templates.

 

3. Sew you spokes in sets of three, and press them. My pictures show more set because I was working on more than one block...

4. Using your favorite curve sewing method, take one set of three spokes and sew it to one A piece. Press toward the A piece. Then sew the corner part or B piece, and press.

If you're using a curve master I recommend you place your piece A a bit higher than the spokes as shown in the picture. This way it'll be easier to square up the fourths before sewing them into a wagon wheel block.

5. Repeat step 4 with the rest of the three spoke sets. 

6. Square up your four small blocks to 5.5"

7. Pin two of these blocks together. Make sure the seams of your spoke match up correctly. Sew them and press the seams open. Do the same with the other two.

8. Pin the two halves together matching the seams as much as possible, sew them, and press them and square them up. I squared them up to 10" for an easy manageable number. 

And there you have it, a wagon wheel variation!

Ahora en Español...

Dos años atrás escribí un tutorial para hacer el bloque del "la rueda de carreta" (Wagon Wheel block). En dicho tutorial explico como hacer este bloque de una manera tradicional. Me gustó tanto este modelo que hice un quilt completo con cuarenta y tantos bloques aplicados a mano. Sinceramente,  no creo que nunca jamás me atreva a volverlo a hacer, pero mi amor por los bloques con curvas siguió. Seguí experimentando y aprendiendo, e hice este, este y este otro proyecto sólo por el amor a las curvas.

Hoy les quiero mostrar como hacer el mismo bloque en una manera totalmente diferente y mucho más simple, un poco tramposo?? Para este tutorial yo usé el "Curve Master" . No es totalmente necesario, pero yo lo prefiero a tener que poner todos los alfileres para coser una curva. Mi sugerencia es que cada quien escoja el método que le funcione mejor. Aquí tienen este video tutorial, y este otro tutorial.

Hasta ahora hice ocho de estos bloques y todo funciona de maravilla!!

Como siempre, todas las costura son de 1/4"...

1. Baja los esténciles de acá, imprímelos y cortalos en algún material fuerte como cartulina, o alguna mica delgada.

2. Con el esténcil que dice spoke/rayo corta seis "rayos" de telas variadas,  cuatro piezas A y cuatro piezas B de tela para el fondo del bloque.

3. Cose los rayos en grupos de tres y plánchalos. La foto muestra más de cuatro grupos porque hice más de un bloque para este projecto.

4. Toma uno de tus grupos de tres rayos y cóselo a una pieza A. Plánchalo hacia la pieza A. Después cose la pieza B y plánchalo hacia la pieza B. Al planchar, trata de no forzar la curva para no deformar el bloque.

Si estás usando el "Curve Master" recomiendo sobreponer la pieza A un poquito sobresalida del borde. Este detalle me ayudó al momento de cuadrar y emparejar los bordes correctamente. Repite el paso 4 con el resto de los grupos de tres rayos.

6. Empareja los cuatro cuadrados. Estos deben medir 5.5".

 

7. Junta con alfileres dos de los cuatro bloquecitos asegurando que las costuras de los rayos embonen perfectamente. Cóselos y plancha la costura abierta. Haz los mismo con las otra dos piezas.

8. Junta las dos mitades con alfileres asegurándose de que todas las costuras están perfectamente alineadas. Ahora cóselas, plancha la costura y empareja los bordes. El tamaño final de este bloque es 10" por lado.

 

Ahí lo tienes! Una variación en el bloque de la rueda de carreta.

The news

As November comes closer, my kitchen fairies, my husband, and I are getting ready for our next adventure. We're being relocated to Córdoba, Argentina!! It sounds exciting, but I'd be lying  to you if I don't admit that I'm crazy nervous about this move. This decision has lots of positive things such as the girls being immersed in Latin American culture. My husband will be able to grow in his career. As for me: I'll get to make lots of new friends and I'll rejoice in the fact that I'll be back to live in a Spanish speaking country; as well as to live close by family and friends. I'll get back to my culture, as I'll be also happy to make new friends. I took a minute to browse the internet and I found that there are quilters in Córdoba too. I contacted Liliana from Córdoba quilting. She wrote back so quick, that she made me feel already welcome.

There is so much to plan, and to get done before the moving company comes to get our stuff. The paper work got done tonight. We're cleaning our basement and listing a few items for sale. I also have to make sure I have enough sewing supplies to survive at least for one year. After that I have the certainty that my husband, my mom, and my BIL will be flying back and forth between the US and Argentina a few times a year so that I can get some fabric from the US. I can also have to rely on the postal service to get new fabrics and books. 

My sewing studio will be move to our new location, I won't be able to sew for a couple of months. In order to not go crazy (and therefore drive my man crazy) I'm packing my SG quilt to be handquilted in the meantime. I'am also packing my shells, and lots of embroidery patterns to stitch while I get settled in Córdoba.

As for this my craft blog. I'm planning to keep posting from my laptop. Somehow, after three years this blog has become one of my favorite places I simply can give it up, and give up being in touch with all of you. All I'm going to ask from you is that you send us some good vibes, wish us good luck, and keep visiting my blog as you usually do.

Shades of Grey @ Fat Quarterly

Fat quarterly and Daisy Janie teamed up to challenge 10 of their readers in a Shades of Grey fabric challenge. Each of us received a sampler of the new Shades of Grey fabric line by Jan DiCintio to make a craft/quilt design inspired by her new beautiful fabric line. 

I came up with a quilt pattern that later turned into a pillow. I had fun working with the design: I sketched it, them I made my templates and cut my fabrics. I played, and played with them until I found a nice balance between the grey fabrics designs and the solid fabrics that were included in the package… and saw it together. The pattern is coming soon here at 3KF.

My project is posted today at Fat Quarterly, and a bunch more lovely projects will be unveiled in the following posts. I highly recommend to keep visiting Fat Quarterly for inspiration, and maybe more challenges for its readers.
